dexter11
The title is self-explanatory. I'd like to mount this camera. How should I do that? lsusb is not showing anything (meaning it only shows my printer). Tried the control center but no appropiate setting for cameras there, at least I couldn't find any. Tried if mount /dev/sda helps -> special device /dev/sda doesn't exist. arctic
when you plug in the camera, try to access your devices section in konqueror. it might pop up as sda, sda1, sdb or sdb2 and so forth, depending on your overall configuration. make sure that hotplug i enabled in your system. check in the mcc the system services. if that does not help, you can still create a static link to your usb-camera and make the appropriate entry in your /etc/fstab file. a side note: gnome handles digital cameras better than kde imho, so you could give that a try. pmpatrick
Which version of mandrake are you running? Most recent cameras can be detected as usb mass storage devices in linux. However you must have the usb modules loaded for the system to detect the device. Run the following as root and post the output: # lsmod That will list all loaded modules. Also, with the camera connected and turned on, post the output of: # fdisk -l That should list all mountable filesystems recognized by the system, whether presently mounted or not. If that is the case, no wonder it doesn't create /dev/sda Is udev service running? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> udev starts at boot. The list was taken when the camera was not plugged in, just to show that necessary things start at boot. Should usb-storage be started at boot, or is it started by udev? Oh I forgot this: the OS is Mandriva 2005 LE.
DragonMage
It is usually started by udev. How about the services harddrake, haldaemon, and hotplug? Are they running? Open a console and type this command as root tail -f /var/log/messages And see if there are any changes when the camera is plugged in and out. pmpatrick
The usb-storage module should be loaded when the device is connected and turned on as well as sd_mod IIRC. It's not in your lsmod output. Try manually loading the modules with: # modprobe sd_mod # modprobe usb-stroage Then with the device connected and powered on, run: # fdisk -l and see if you get any sdx entry. pmpatrick
With those modules loaded and the camera connected and switched to the download/view mode(see camera manual if available), open up Digikam which can be found at Menu>Graphics>Digikam for LE2005. In digikam, go to Camera>Add Camera. In the resulting popup window try the "Autodetect" button. If nothing is autodetected, try the "Add..." button and select the closest thing you can find; I saw an entry for Panasonic DMC-FZ20 for example. Your added camera will become an entry in the Camera menu; click on that entry and a window will popup and either download the images from the camera or give you an error message that it could not download the images. You can also try the same kind of thing with FLPhoto if your a gnome guy. Note, it is important that the camera is switched to the proper mode or it won't be detected in either windows or linux. For example, my canon has a slide switch on the back which is slid to the right to take photos and to the left to view/download photos. If that switch isn't to the left and the camera turned on, it won't be detected. Your problem could be something that simple. If nothing works, the fallback is to pull the memory card out of the camera and use a usb card reader.

No autodetection, tried with the DMC-FZ20 settings and it gave a popup error messege that the camera couldn't be detected or it's not connected. Of course it was connected and switched on. About the download/view mode: the camera seems to autodetect this mode cause once I plug it in it says "USB mode" and "PC" on the screen. If it's not enough then I don't know where to switch this on, I couldn't find anything related to this in the camera's settings and manual is not available.Note, it is important that the camera is switched to the proper mode or it won't be detected in either windows or linux.
