Go into the console in Linux and type free.

Hit ENTER.

Highlight all the 'free' text and copy and paste it into a post with

[ code ] before, and [ /code ] after (without the spaces).

Well, I just upgraded a bit, with prices in freefall and my warranty on my first stick of 512MB expiring; wanted to make sure it would run with company :)

$ free

total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached

Mem:        904416     291264     613152          0      16028     133152

-/+ buffers/cache:     142084     762332

Swap:      1044184          0    1044184

I installed memtest (urpmi memtest-86 or so, it installs in lilo, you run it instead of booting linux) and the memory passed (took an hour of testing for all different patterns to finish) so that was nice.

BTW yesterday installed mdk9.0 on a PIII 667MHz with 64MB of ram, and it took a good 2 hours!!! That same install takes only 50mins on my girlfriends duron700 (384MB sdr ram)....

Oh yeah, I currently have evolution, opera, vnc, bluefish, gkrellm and a bunch of terminals open, running kde. Guess if I start editing with Gimp the mem usage will go up, but don't think I'll have to get new memory soon ;)

Kewl! Just remember you can never not have enough ram!

I am the Ram Hog!

At least that's what Steve at CompUSA calls me because I've always gotten his assistance in choosing what parts I should buy for my computers (eventhough I buy the majority of them from the web, I still buy enough stuff from the to keep them in business).

My next step is buying another gig of ram for my # 2 computer. After I replace the hard drive, DVD-RW drive, and CD-RW drives. And of course see if I can order another panel for it. But that's all discussed in another thread on this board.

I'm right behind ya, CloakedPenguin.

When people ask me "How much memory does my computer need?", I always reply with the question, "How much does it hold?"

1GB Swap file is for those just in case moments. he he he

Yup... there is no such thing as too little memory. When I lowered my memory from 512 MB to 256 MB (because of a problematic MB), I can feel it.. I think I'll wait until DDR Prices drop some more before upgrading my memory again since I just spend a few hundred dollars updating my computer to speed.
