Ok, first- upgrade to xorg 6.8 otherwise it will not detect an xorg installation

second - on a fresh install of amndrake 10.1, after downloading the installer you have to change the permissions - "chmod 777 ati*" to get it to run

--however --

after reboot I'm getting

[root@box1 root]# glxgears
379 frames in 5.0 seconds = 75.800 FPS
280 frames in 5.0 seconds = 56.000 FPS

and

So initial installation is easy, however, I am still left at the same issue I've always had with my Radeon 9200, and that is that Direct Rendering is disabled. and I'm still using Mesa GL drivers. If only they could make it idiot proof, THEN it would be right on the money.

My verdict:

Graphical install = good

Still having to figure out what's buggering up = not so good

ATI releasing an installer on the day that I decide to switch completely to linux no matter what = priceless

Must be a sign from above, Huh ???. But a good one anyway.

Now we need Canon to produce drivers for the PIXMA series of printers and a simpler to install set of drivers for the i series as well. Epson certainly shows the way here as also does nvidia.

Congrats on having no Windows or Gates to your vision of the world.

Cheers. John.

I had the same problem as you I think it was when I was running 10.0 OE. I tried the XFree86 drivers, and couldn't get direct-rendering to work no matter what I tried, and everything was configured exactly as it should be.

Anyway, a rebuild later, and I have it working, BUT, big difference is I'm now running LE2005 on this machine. First, I installed 10.0 OE, because I have this on CD. I would put 10.1 OE, but I only have this on DVD, and the machine doesn't have a DVD drive. So, after I got 10.0 OE on the system, I pointed the urpmi sources to 2005, and updated the system using "urpmi --auto-select --auto". This updated everything it needed to make sure it was LE2005.

Then, all I did, was install the mesa stuff, and add:

Section "DRI"

Mode 0666

EndSection

to the xorg.conf file. Since I upgraded to LE2005, I was now running Xorg 6.8.2 instead of XFree86. I didn't bother to install the ATI drivers, because I wasn't sure if it would cause me to break the system. However, my ATI Radeon 128MB 9250 card runs 1200fps or so. So I'm happy with this, and direct-rendering is working sweet :P

Not bad those new drivers and the installer sure looks nice.

Hopefully they'll continue this way.

Here is the result of my tests:

[manu@localhost ~]$ fgl_glxgears

2811 frames in 5.0 seconds = 562.200 FPS

3368 frames in 5.0 seconds = 673.600 FPS

3374 frames in 5.0 seconds = 674.800 FPS

3357 frames in 5.0 seconds = 671.400 FPS

3366 frames in 5.0 seconds = 673.200 FPS

3360 frames in 5.0 seconds = 672.000 FPS

3352 frames in 5.0 seconds = 670.400 FPS

3336 frames in 5.0 seconds = 667.200 FPS

[manu@localhost ~]$ glxgears

10736 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2147.200 FPS

10734 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2146.800 FPS

10738 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2147.600 FPS

10738 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2147.600 FPS

10738 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2147.600 FPS

10734 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2146.800 FPS

After installing you need to reboot, just a restart of X isn't enough.

After several nights of unrest and working the graveyard shift, I was sitting around this morning and a thought popped in my head.

I haven't disabled the on-board video under linux (ever).

Now when I use windows, the onboard auto disables when I set DAC snooping to "off", but my money is on the fact that linux is still trying to us my 8mb of onboard glory.

Now keep in mind there is

1) No jumpers on the Mobo

2) No option in the BIOS to disable the onboard video

Dell's Forums say that it should auto disable when and Add-in controller is present, but how do I check this. In Windows, the device just fails to start (Code 10) when the add in is present, I'd go to the Device manager and just disable it, no big deal.

Currently I'm set up as such:

Dell Optiplex Gx1p

Latest BIOS revision (A10 I beleive)

ATI Radeon 9200 128mb (PCI)

DAC Snooping "Off"

Does anyone know where I'd go from here or need more info to make it so? Any help would be MOST, MOST, MOST appreciated.

:phe4r;

When you installed the system, was the monitor connected to the onboard video or the AGP card ?

What you could try is the stop the module for the onboard video from loading.

Other thing, pls post your xorg.conf file or check it for any device sections and check which driver gets loaded.

Also try to do a "modprobe fglrx" and give us the output of the /var/log/syslog or dmesg.

Sorry, did not read your post quite well, your card is a PCI card ! I think the drivers won't work on a PCI card, not for 3D accelleration anyway.

When I checked the drivers they only included support for AGP or PCI-Express cards, no mentioning of older PCI cards.

From a card like that I wouldn't expect any decent 3D performance anyway, that card is mainly used for office application.

For a cheap upgrade I would get an AGP 9600PRO or XT and sell the 9200PCI card.

Ok, so now that I'm home:

Hallowed, could you try to past the result of the command: fglrxinfo instead of glxinfo and also the result of a run with fgl_glxgear instead of glxgears.

[root@box1 root]# fgl_glxgear
bash: fgl_glxgear: command not found
[root@box1 root]#

When you installed the system, was the monitor connected to the onboard video or the AGP card ?

Other thing, pls post your xorg.conf file or check it for any device sections and check which driver gets loaded.
