Mandriva Linux 2006 Beta 3 Reviewed

http://distroreviews.com/index.php?view=109

I had Beta 2 installed, did an update just now and got 165 packages updated for the Beta 3 changes.

Only problem I had - the mouse quit working but in harddrake, I changed to ImPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse from the default Any PS/2 or USB Mouse and it immediately began working again (without having to shut down and restart).

I have the last rc (version 0.5) and it is a finished product. I especially like the new installation graphics--very clean and professional looking. I have already wiped 2005LE. I'll just utilize urpmi to update the rest. BTW, Nvidia installed flawlessly and my kt600 chipset works better than with 2005LE. Sound came up as well with no Nvidia nforce install. I just installed the video.

How is Mandriva 2006 called among devs when it leads to version numbers?

I mean, we had 9.2, 10.0, 10.1, etc., what version is Mandriva 2006? 10.3? 10.5? 11.0?! :juggle:

edit: I'm downloading rc2 now. Synaptic (in rc2) seems very nice :jester:

Hello,

do you know when the DVD version comes ?

There are no DVD's, officially that is. At the moment the RC's are only CD's. However you can get an unnofficial DVD for RC2 from here: http://www.gaganc.org/2006rc2.iso.torrent.

Alternatively there is a bash script to merge the cd's into a DVD iso you could try for yourself, found here: http://webpages.charter.net/upsnag/misc/mdvcd2dvd.sh.gz

Cheers

Hello,

Thank you very much Reiver_Flutti ;)

I have still two questions. This RC2 is really the future official version ? And Which sources do I have to use with urpmi ?

Yes. There will be a few updates, but it's about 95%-98% of the official version (from my past experience).

And Which sources do I have to use with urpmi ?

Cooker as the main for now. Later you can set the real main source (of the to be released official version) as an update and from there update your RC to an official version.

I'm not sure how Mandriva 2006 likes 2005 packages, but if there aren't any dire changes the 2005 packages should work ok. You can always replace them later when 2006 rpms come out.

I think I'll get it. Not that I'm in a particular hurry, but my current system too is nothing more than an update from 2005 RC2

Solarian, hold off a couple of days, Final is Scheduled for Friday 16th (to quote Mr Williamson on the Club Forums).

To update on the above post, the schedule now sets 20th (Tuesday) as the estimated release date for 2006.
