And the following section is in xorg.conf?

Section "DRI"

Mode 0666

EndSection

Also, check for a line, normally near the beginning which says load dri?  Also, what version of xorg is running?  I think if you're running LE2005, it'll be 6.8.0.

That section is correct, and the option to load dri was enabled, xorg was version 6.8.0, and then upgraded to 6.8.2 with the same issue. I've formatted my system yesterday, and will be installing a fresh install of linux (I can thank windows for this problem - stupid automatic updates breaking my install) so I'm not trying to troubleshoot my system right now, I'm just adding my 2 cents of experience, and looking for an answer as I'm SURE i'll run into this issue again this time around.

OK, you can try this too.

If you're doing a fresh install, don't install the ATI drivers, and see what performance you get? Reason I say this is I'm using a Radeon 9250 card, with LE2005, and I didn't install the ATI drivers. It works, at around 1000fps. To get it to work, you'll have to install mesa, and then edit the xorg.conf and add the Section DRI I mentioned before. Then apply MandrivaUpdates (I normally apply all normal, security and bugfixes). Obviously, rebooting the system after, as you'll need to restart X before the new settings take effect.

If you've currently got the system with the ATI drivers on, then you could always try removing the ATI drivers using urpme or the Remove Software option (file begins with fglrx). Then reconfigure the card, and check the xorg.conf for the section information etc, and make sure you've checked the MandrivaUpdates to see if there are updates for mesa, etc. Rebooting afterwards, to pick up the new settings.

I'm not on my LE2005 system at the minute, but I will get on it in about an hour, as it's tied up with my missus playing Frozen Bubble!!!!

When I do "glxinfo | grep direct" I get:

direct rendering: No

OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect

And, yeah, those bits of xorg.conf are all uncommented and located in the right places. I'm off to try that link you posted...

That's it - ATI's new installer did the trick. I'm getting around 2930 fps in glxgears. It even restored my sound. It's kind of a shame - I still have no idea what caused the problem in the first place. But at least I learned a little more about how Linux works. You guys were a lot of help. Thanks!

Disabling onboad video can be done through the bios.

If you don't have the option you should at least have an option to select the first display device (Onboard or AGP), set that to AGP.

Best shot will remain to disable the onboard video.

You can always compare your xorg.conf file with the xorg.orig that was made as a backup by the ATI installer. That way you'll notice maybe the difference, a setting or maybe a module you forgot to include.
