UponFirstListen
Mandrake 10.1 KDE 3.2.3 TDK VeloCD 40/12/48B Been running Mandrake 10.1 for about 6 months now and had no problems burning CDs. I was burning a few today, and, as usual, no problems. The last CD I was burning was going as normal and had reached 100%, but the buffer hadn't emptied (sitting at 18%), so I let it run. It ran for 17 minutes with no change. Killed K3b and tried again, same exact thing (buffer at 18%). Rebooted and tried again. Same thing. Rebooted and tried a different set of audio and K3b won't recognize that there's a blank CD in the drive. If I try and force the media, I get the following: System----------------------- K3b Version:0.11.16 KDE Version: 3.2.3 QT Version: 3.3.3 cdrecord ----------------------- scsidev: '/dev/hdc' devname: '/dev/hdc' scsibus: -2 target: -2 lun: -2 Warning: Open by 'devname' is unintentional and not supported. I have perused the internet (including this forum), but was unable to find anyone experiencing a siminal problem. I'm going to try and anticipate a few problems first, so as to expedite things. The drive mounts properly and I can read both data and audio from previously-burned and factory CDs. I have tried a plethora of media, all to no avail. I used a piece of media I attempted to force (only to receive the above message) and was able to successfully burn data onto it on another computer. cdrecord -scanbus yields: Cdrecord-Clone 2.01.01a01-dvd (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2004 Jörg Schilling Note: This version is an unofficial (modified) version with DVD support Note: and therefore may have bugs that are not present in the original. Steve Scrimpshire
You don't need scsi emulation anymore in kernel-2.6 to burn CDs. Try removing the part of the append line in lilo.conf that says hdc=ide-scsi and run lilo -v as root and reboot. See if that clears up the problem. UponFirstListen
I've tried with and without that line in my lilo.conf to no avail. I had seen that line on a few message boards and started playing with it.
devries
Try turning off dma for the cdrom. (hdparm -d0 /dev/hdc) or try burning as root.
UponFirstListen
Had tried burning as both user and root to no effect. I just turned off DMA, but am getting the exact same results. Something I neglected to mention is that when I do force the media, I get the following: Error while decoding audio tracks.Removing buffer files. Unlocking drive... Could not unlock CD drive. Not sure if that's helpful, but I'm just getting frustrated with the whole thing.
arctic
how old is the burner? maybe the laser needs some cleaning or it simply died. (worst case scenario)
scarecrow
"Error while decoding audio tracks" Is libmad installed? Which K3B version are you using?
UponFirstListen
libmad is installed. k3b version is 0.11.16. The drive is rather old (at least 4 years), so perhaps it's just time for a new one. In the meantime, it still reads CDs, so I've got that going for me. UponFirstListen
Weirdest thing, I posted the above reply and figured I'd give it one more chance. Put the files into k3b and it started burning like it was never a problem. Go figure. I just wish I knew what had caused it and how to prevent it from happening in the future. Oh well, thanks for everyone's help.
AussieJohn
I think Arctic has given the clue. I suggest you run a disc cleaner. It is very likely some lint got trapped near the laser originally and then cleared itself. Running the disc cleaner should catch it. Another possibility is that you need to upgrade the firmware. To quote a personal experience from the past few days :- I found that I could not burn any CD-RW or DVD-RW discs or reformat them either, yet I could burn CD-R and DVD-R or+R discs Aok and could read any discs ok in the LG GSA-4120B burner. I experienced 2 to 3 days of solving the problem even to the point of getting an RA number to return it under Warranty exercised a hunch and chased down the new firmware from LG and installed it. Everything has run and functioned perfectly ever since. Try both things. With lasers they either work or they don´t, they do not just fade out so your problem is likely minor. Cheers. John. When I urpmi -y libmad the only packages that are available are: alsaplayer-plugin-input-mad libmad0 libmad0-devel I need libmad0? Dakota
FIXED! Sort of. I removed k3b cdrecord cdrtools (may not have this, but check anyway) cdrdao (for disc at once recording) cdparanoia (to prevent overburns, buffer overflows, etc.) mkisofs (iso burning software) then reinstalled the packages except retrieved cdrecord from update_source and now I can burn cd's. However my average writing speed is 10x and my burner is a 48x16x48 Any ideas?
scarecrow
However my average writing speed is 10x and my burner is a 48x16x48 Any ideas? Oh, that's natural! In fact it's the standard behaviour of the dog 2.6.8.X kernels used in 10.1 (Linus forgot the 2.6.8 fiasco rather quickly, but unfortunately 10.1 is still using them...). If you want better speeds, then either 1. Run k3b as root, or 2. Use 2.6.7.X from contrib, or 3. compile a newer kernel (2.6.11 is fine, as well as 2.6.12), or finally 4. Upgrade to 2005 LE. Dakota
Sorry I forgot to add that I am running Mandriva LE2005. In windows I could burn at 48x so in linux it should burn at 60x Figured there would be a fix.
AussieJohn
Have you tried going to the website of the CDROM burner maker and obtain an up to date firmware download. I had troubles with my LG DVD burner but after a new firmware install, it has been 100% OK (3weeks ago and many burns since). Give it a try. Cheers. John.
