Sudden Inability to Burn CDs (k3b)

Mandrake 10.1

KDE 3.2.3

TDK VeloCD 40/12/48B

Been running Mandrake 10.1 for about 6 months now and had no problems burning CDs. I was burning a few today, and, as usual, no problems. The last CD I was burning was going as normal and had reached 100%, but the buffer hadn't emptied (sitting at 18%), so I let it run. It ran for 17 minutes with no change. Killed K3b and tried again, same exact thing (buffer at 18%). Rebooted and tried again. Same thing. Rebooted and tried a different set of audio and K3b won't recognize that there's a blank CD in the drive. If I try and force the media, I get the following:

I have perused the internet (including this forum), but was unable to find anyone experiencing a siminal problem. I'm going to try and anticipate a few problems first, so as to expedite things.

The drive mounts properly and I can read both data and audio from previously-burned and factory CDs.

I have tried a plethora of media, all to no avail.

I used a piece of media I attempted to force (only to receive the above message) and was able to successfully burn data onto it on another computer.

cdrecord -scanbus yields:

I just can't seem to figure it out. I have tried uninstalling cdrecord and k3b, both to no avail. What's curious to me is that it worked one minute, but not the next. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Had tried burning as both user and root to no effect. I just turned off DMA, but am getting the exact same results. Something I neglected to mention is that when I do force the media, I get the following:

Error while decoding audio tracks.

Removing buffer files.

Unlocking drive...

Could not unlock CD drive.

Not sure if that's helpful, but I'm just getting frustrated with the whole thing.

I think Arctic has given the clue. I suggest you run a disc cleaner.

It is very likely some lint got trapped near the laser originally and then cleared itself. Running the disc cleaner should catch it.

Another possibility is that you need to upgrade the firmware.

To quote a personal experience from the past few days :- I found that I could not burn any CD-RW or DVD-RW discs or reformat them either, yet I could burn CD-R and DVD-R or+R discs Aok and could read any discs ok in the LG GSA-4120B burner. I experienced 2 to 3 days of solving the problem even to the point of getting an RA number to return it under Warranty exercised a hunch and chased down the new firmware from LG and installed it. Everything has run and functioned perfectly ever since.

Try both things. With lasers they either work or they don´t, they do not just fade out so your problem is likely minor.

Cheers. John.

I have this exact same problem with an ASUS 48x16x48, what did you do to fixit?

When I urpmi -y libmad the only packages that are available are:

alsaplayer-plugin-input-mad
libmad0
libmad0-devel

I need libmad0?

FIXED! Sort of. I removed

k3b

cdrecord

cdrtools (may not have this, but check anyway)

cdrdao (for disc at once recording)

cdparanoia (to prevent overburns, buffer overflows, etc.)

mkisofs (iso burning software)

then reinstalled the packages except retrieved cdrecord from update_source and now I can burn cd's. :lol2:

However my average writing speed is 10x and my burner is a 48x16x48 :wall:

Any ideas?

Oh, that's natural! :cheeky:

In fact it's the standard behaviour of the dog 2.6.8.X kernels used in 10.1 (Linus forgot the 2.6.8 fiasco rather quickly, but unfortunately 10.1 is still using them...).

If you want better speeds, then either

1. Run k3b as root, or

2. Use 2.6.7.X from contrib, or

3. compile a newer kernel (2.6.11 is fine, as well as 2.6.12), or finally

4. Upgrade to 2005 LE.

Have you tried going to the website of the CDROM burner maker and obtain an up to date firmware download. I had troubles with my LG DVD burner but after a new firmware install, it has been 100% OK (3weeks ago and many burns since).

Give it a try. Cheers. John.
