NVIDIA drivers on Mandriva 2005, X fails to start

Hey all,

I've just upgraded to Mandriva 2005 (well, a clean install really) and installed the latest NVIDIA drivers without problem, however after restarting my computer all appears to go fine but instead of being auto logged into KDE I get sent to the terminal. At first I assumed i'd been left in runlevel 3 as a result of driver install, so I logged in at terminal and typed "init 5" to get back to where I wanted to be, but this did nothing, turns out I was in run level 5 but X refused to run. However typing "startx" brings it up with no problems.

I had a look through the logs, not really knowing what I was looking for and found in syslog:

May 21 16:45:50 david-collett-252-220 kernel: nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel.

May 21 16:45:50 david-collett-252-220 kernel: NVRM: loading NVIDIA Linux x86 NVIDIA Kernel Module  1.0-7174  Tue Mar 22 06:44:39 PST 2005

May 21 16:45:50 david-collett-252-220 mDNSResponder:  startup succeeded

May 21 16:45:50 david-collett-252-220 atd: atd startup succeeded

May 21 16:45:51 david-collett-252-220 kdm: :0[7304]: IO Error in XOpenDisplay

May 21 16:45:51 david-collett-252-220 kdm[7150]: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly

May 21 16:45:51 david-collett-252-220 kdm[7150]: Display :0 cannot be opened

May 21 16:45:51 david-collett-252-220 kdm[7150]: Unable to fire up local display :0; disabling.

Which seems to suggest a problem with my display? or atleast the configuration of it. Now I followed the same process for installing the drivers as i did in 10.1 so I cant see what I've done wrong. Also, if its a problem starting X then why does "startx" at the terminal work fine?

Anyone with any ideas or a sollution to this problem?

Cheers

Follow these directions exactly - I did actually check them for typos :cheesy:

1 ) I presume you changed the line in /etc/inittab the one that says:

id:3:initdefault: ...make it say:

id:5:initdefault:

2 ) I presume you ADDED a line to /etc/modprobe.preload that says nothing but

nvidia

3 ) I presume you changed /etc/X11/xorg.conf where it says

"nv" to:

"nvidia" (keep the quotes that are there in the file)

If no joy, get back to me!

:D

Kristi (don't you just love that line: "kernel: nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel." :cheesy:

Thanks kristi,

It's official, I'm an idiot :D

yes I'd changed inittab back to run level 5

yes I'd changed "nv" to "nvidia"

but no I hadn't added nvidia to modprobe.preload

Now I have, and all is well.

Cheers again, nice quick resolution to that problem :thanks:

  • 2 weeks later...

these tweaks are great kristi but,

why do we need to make these tweaks !!!

newbies don't know how to get round these problems (this is not good for mandriva)

we didn't have to in previous nvidia driver installations!

just run the install script and edit the xf86 conf file and that was it it just worked.

now all of a sudden everything is broken by the install of the driver!

is this a mandriva 2005LE problem or a Nvidia driver installation problem?

either way i'm back on to mandrake 10oe and all is working fine thank you.

us newbies don't need this you know roflmao :beer::beer::beer::beer:

Well, you've always had to do #3 (it's in the Nvidia installation instructions). #2 is new, it seems to be that there's something in the stock init sequence which ought to cause the nvidia module to get loaded but it doesn't always happen in time, so that hack makes it get loaded earlier in the boot sequence.
