shaner
Hey everyone, I have searched the forum, read the usb fixes, and come up empty handed. Sorry if I missed something. I have a no name usb flash drive, says "Geek Squad" on it from Best Buy, but no manufacturer name. When I plug it in, it doesn't work. I have tried several fixes from other posts, but don't really know what I am doing. How can I get this to work? I'm using KDE. I'm used to plug it in and it works kind of stuff. It's a XP thing. Thanks. Shane Sorry forgot to add I'm using 10.1 Community Edited May 18, 2005 by shaner

VeeDubb
one suggestiont hat will almost certainly fix it, is to upgrae to the latest version of mandrake, now called Mandriva Limited Edition 2005. They have updated and changed the way that things like USB flash drives are handled and it's WAY better. As for a fix in 10.1, I've got that for you too. The usual reason, and you can see for your self if this is the case with your flash drive, is the lack of partition table. Let me explain. Frequently, things like pen drives are simply formatted. They aren't actualy partitioned. Try plugging it in, and opening up the mandrake control center, and going to partitions. you'll see hda, and then sda (or sdb or sdc and so on). sdx is for scsi devices like flash drives. My guess is that it will be formatted fat32, or fat16, but won't actualy have any partitions. What you can do, is partition it with one big fat32 partition, and then mandrake 10.1 'should' automount it. You might have to reboot afterwards. If that doesn't work, I say go for my first suggestion. My generic pen drive, formatted only, no partitions, work great for the first time in 10.2 (aka Mandriva le 2005)
shaner
Thanks VeeDubb, and MrMad, I was thinking of upgrading, anyway, but didn't see the point in it. If USB works that much better I may give that a whirl maybe tonight. If not, I will be back posting here to get this thing straightened out. Thanks again for your help. shaner
Ok, updated and went very smoothly. Wow that was really nice. Now I'm running 2005. So I plugged it in, and presto....... nothing. Didn't work. Probably if I had done a new install it would have worked, but nothing. Ok, one detail, My Cd2 was bad and so I didn't get anything from CD2 installed. 3 was fine. I'm going to run the update and then retry and then if not, I will post again. Thanks for the help. Shane
polemicz
set up your media as main and contrib in urpmi and remove the cd's from your media list. As long as you have decent internet spped that's the best way. also there are rpms there that aren't on the cd's.
VeeDubb
The CD's should contain everything that has to do with the handling of USB flash drives, but if CD2 was borked, you've got a lot of really important stuff missing, and media handling may be some of that. shaner
VeeDubb, I can re-burn that CD tonight when I go back to the office, and then run through the install process again, can't hurt anything. Wouldn't I be able to get anything missing on CD2 through the updates? I'm updating now, I have DSL, but wouldn't call it fast. Thanks. shaner
Ok, here is the deal, I re-installed and CD 2 worked this time!!! so I plugged it in, and presto..... nothing. I know one of these post will be presto ..... IT WORKED. but we aren't there yet. Now I'm at a loss. I'm urpmi-ing, but don't really see how this will solve my problem. I tried the trail -f/var/log/messages but it just said to try trail --help, and that gave me a bunch of help info, but not system info. I'm at a loss. Any ideas??? Thanks in advance. Shane Ok, didn't work now I really need help. I plug it in and nothing happens. I don't have any sda devices. I don't have any in my fstab either. I don't know what to put there. MrMad
You should issue the tail -f /var/log/messages as root in console. Also you can try the dmesg . Look for mesages related to USB and SCSI - paste the result here .... Another way (but less helpful) is go to the control center - hardware - and there please take a look where Your device is listed. We need to see the log to help You ... without it is hopeless.... :deal:
shaner
Thanks MrMad, Ok, it worked this time. I don't know if I was logged in as root last time, or typed wrong. VeeDubb
May 19 08:28:58 mandrake kernel: usb 4-5: device not accepting address 10, error -71 May 19 08:28:58 mandrake kernel: usb 4-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 11 May 19 08:28:58 mandrake kernel: ehci_hcd 0000:00:1d.7: port 5 reset error -110 May 19 08:28:58 mandrake kernel: hub 4-0:1.0: hub_port_status failed (err = -32) pretty sure that's the problem. IF I'm reading that right, and lord knows I may not be, the problem is with the port you're plugging it into. Or, it might be that the flash drive itself it dead. Do you have access to another computer? Might be worth checking.
shaner
VeeDubb, I use it with Windows all the time, so I know the drive is good. I also know the USB port is good because I'm dual booting, and don't have a problem with that port. I use the Flash Drive with XP in that same port, which eliminates all hardware, it is a setup problem. Thanks for the thought though! I guess if I had mentioned some of that earlier, it may have made it easier on everyone. Sorry. I messed up with my partitioning, and now want to transfer files via my USB drive. I work on about 3 different computers in different locations, so my USB is like my briefcase. Shane Also I have a 4 port USB hub. It is generic and gives me 4 other USB ports since I only have 3 on my laptop. That is the excessive amount of USB's you see. My printer, Palm (when not running doesn't effect nothing) are plugged into the hub, my mouse is direct to the USB on the computer and the Flash Drive is plugged directly to the computer's USB port. MrMad
Hmm .. I'm not an expert too but for me: May 19 08:28:58 mandrake kernel: usb 4-5: device descriptor read/64, error -71May 19 08:28:59 mandrake kernel: usb 4-5: device descriptor read/64, error -71 looks like a serious problem - device descriptor can;'t be accessed. Hmm ... Can You paste here the result (as root of course) of lsmod and lsusb -v ?
shaner
MrMad, Ok this is really crazy. In windows I reformated the drive to eliminate any errors there. I unplugged everything from the USB to eliminate problems there. In the command line I tried the tail -f/var/log/messages line again, and it didn't work!!! I wanted to see if that eliminated some of the errors.
