Guest ajba74
Hi everyone, I could not set my Agere PCI SV92P modem in Mandrake 10.0 Searching the Supported Hardware link, in mandrakelinux.com, gave no results for the brands most easily available for me (Intel 537EP and LG I56N) and very well suitable for redhat (Isn't it odd?). What is the most suitable modem for Mandrake 10.0? Thank you all, Arnaldo.
Ixthusdan
Any hardware modem works. The lists are not all inclusive. Avoid "winmodems". The modem should be "controller based" or some such language.
Steve Scrimpshire
If it works on Redhat, it'll work on ManCondrakiva. By far, an external serial modem is the best bet...or really any controller-based modem as Ix suggests. Even when it comes to Windows, you'll get better dialup speed and stability with a controller-based/serial modem. Ironically, controller-based modems are way easier to get to work in Linux than in Windows. Edited May 7, 2005 by Steve Scrimpshire
Trio3b
Agreed......... DSL thru LAN/NIC is easy and quick- For dialup -external serial hdwr modem (not USB---they are usually winmodems) is next best----no drivers. Hook 'em up and configure in Kppp. (look online ( $15 )or in thrift stores ($1-5)) Any internal PCI modem that I know of whether hdwr or sftwr will require drivers. (google for the AMIGO AMI IA56 int ernal PCI modem w/ Intel ep536 chipset) Takes longer..more work. The actual install is pretty easy......getting there is not. you have to ... 1. match correct drivers to correct kernel no. and/or look for them 2. make sure you have kernel sources installed 3. follow install procedure which is about 5 or 6 steps sounds easy, but if you're new, it can take quite awhile Whichever you do, get help in a forum..........tutorials are too general for newbs good luck Edited May 7, 2005 by Trio3b
VeeDubb
As far as external serial modems, I haven't used many, but the CreativeLab ModemBlaster External is fantastic.
