win9x .cab files? [solved]

Greetings,

I have been searching the posts for a solution for my particular problem, but have not found one. First off, the scsi disk with windows 95 fragged/installed on it just quit. Can't mount it and I get dosfsck error, but I don't really care if there is a way to open/extract a file for a usb scanner I borrowed from a friend.

Its an Artec e+ 48U and I need a firmware file that is on the install cd, but I didn't know I needed it until I went a surf'n and a clickin' . So to try and make a long story short, do I need wine for this or is something in mdk/gnu-linux available? I have downloaded a zip file and extracted it to find a cabinet file that might have the .usb file that I need. Otherwise I might need more help with configuring wine to run an installer for the scanner drivers.

Thank in advance,

Terry

Still new here. Enjoy reading the posts.

I'm using Mdk 10.1

kernel 2.6.8.1-12mdk-i586-up-1GB

ellianef,

Yes I have it installed and sane recognizes the scanner. However, in my searches:

http://www.strw.leidenuniv.nl/cgi-bin/man?...us48u§ion=5

I discovered the need to extract this firmware file from a cabinet file or from the install cd (I don't have) or from the C:\windows\system32 subfolder:

Artec48.usb

Thanks for your reply.

I did finally solve my problem :D , though not the way I had initially intended. Thanks to ellianef and scarecrow for your responses. I'll try to summarize what I did next.

Since I only needed the file: Artec48U.usb, I was initially trying to find a utility to extract the file from an Installshield exe file (e+48U_V142.exe). That was a no go. So I downloaded and installed:

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/wine/wi...efault=easynews

then the same for winetools:

http://ds80-237-203-29.dedicated.hosteurop...1.1-jo.i386.rpm

I also had to install gettext. It was available on the mirrors I had setup:

gettext-0.14.1-9mdk

gettext-base-0.14.1-9mdk

perl-Locale-gettext-1.01-13mdk

libgettextmisc-0.14.1-9mdk

Trying to install the version of wine I had gave me a dependency error concerning xdialog. I had a version installed, but winetools wouldn't install it unless I forced it to:

(a bug in the package?)

[root@tbox root]# rpm -i -v -h --nodeps --force winetools-2.1.1-jo.i386.rpm

Then I started winetools as root  then killed that (after mucking around for awhile) and delect the root's .wine folder and started again as user.

The directions were easy enough and all this for :juggle: only needed one file!

Install DCOM98.exe first then I ran the following:

[terryg@tbox terryg]$ WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ole32,oleaut32,rpcrt4=n" wine c:e+48U_V142.exe

Which I retrieved from the post at this link:

http://frankscorner.org/index.php?p=mathcad11

Above link is wrong  try this instead:

http://frankscorner.org/index.php?p=ishield

Just substituted my filename for the setup.exe and wahla! I got error/warning messages, but the installer completed, placed the firmware file away from the windows files used mcc to install the firmware fiel and I'm now scanning!!!
