Don't forget, if people give you advice or instructions that you don't understand, you should ask them to clarify.

If you don't know how to install the RPM with the kernel source in it, you should ask. I'm pretty sure it's already well covered if you search the boards, but don't be affraid to ask if you can't find it.

Anyway, you realy need to install the source code for the kernel before the driver will work. It needs it.

ftp://mirrors.secsup.org/pub/linux/mandra...586/media/main/

I'm sure you want kernel-source-2.6-2.6.8.1-12mdk.i586.rpm If you've set up easy urpmi , in a terminal, type su , then type your password, then type urpmi kernel-source-2.6 and it should install the right kernel. Or just as good follow the url at the top of this post .download and install the kernel source, the kernel you're using from pbone is the same one that is already installed on your computer.

Cheers

Good thing first. :thanks:

I downloaded the kernel-source-2.6-2.6.8.1-12mdk.i586.rpm from the site given by mtriley98 and then I was able to install the nVidia driver. I installed it with help from this HowTO http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=4567

And everey thing seemed to be fine. I rebooted my computer and now I see the nVidia logo when I start up my computer.

But now there is a bigger problem. :furious3:

When I log into mdk it hangs. After a while it just hangs. I am able to move the mouse curser but nothing happens when I push bottoms. There is no movement on the screen unless my mouse curser. :wall:

What can I do??

I really appreciate that there is people who wants to help noobs like me. :thanks:

I can't get into X anymore so I can only see XF86config when I run filesafe in lilo.

And it would take forever to write down alle that manually.

but some of it is here

Section "Module"

Load "dbe" # Double-Buffering Extension

Load "v4l" # Video for Linux

Load "extmod"

Load "type1"

Load "freetype"

Load "glx" # 3D layer

EndSection

Section "Device"

Identifier "device1"

VendorName "nVidia"

Boardname "NVIDIA GeForce FX(generic)

Driver "nvidia"

Option "DPMS"

EndSection

while I"M thinking about it, I should point out that if you're using a current version fo mandrake, then XF86Config-4 is just a linked file. The real file is /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Why don't you take a quick look at that file and make sure it's the same. You never know, something wonky could be going on.

Also, on thing you could try on your own, you could download one of the older drivers from nvidia, and install it instead, see if maybe X is more stable with another version

XF86Config-4 = Mandrake 10.0

XF86Config = Mandrake 10.1

Your XF86Config looks OK.

What do you get when you enter: cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status

Any error messages in /var/log/XFree86.0.log?

Were you seeing lock-ups when your were using the default video driver?
