devries
I don't use kdm so I can't really tell what is the problem (never bothered to look it up). If I remember correctly the problem has to do with kdm storing its config in a different folder in KDE 3.4. Look in /usr/share/app(config) and look for kdm entries. (I think I read this in the gentoo forums so have a look there :) ) I just search for kde and look at the package names and versions numbers. Missing packages: always urpmi.update -a (or with 10.2 possibly mirrors out of sync) Root entry: I have no idea :) (tip use he run window (alt-F2), app name, more options, root) Login problems: (another tip) In the mcc, startup, disable login in X. That way you will boot in a terminal and from there start KDE (or gnome etcetc)
niti
hey, that's neat!!! but when I boot up it comes to this screen with a analog clock and a couple of boot choices, and a logon and a menu button and when I try to login, it clicks the monitor a few times and then clicks right back to the login screen. This could be because when I first tried to install this, I did it with the 10.1 link, not having read down far enough in the thread to realize there was also a 10.2 link. Naturally there were lots of errors on the 10.1 versoin, and then I put the 10.2 version in and that went smoothly. Anyway, i found I could menu, console login from that screen - I log in and then type kde and 3.4 comes up very nicely. Obviously I could re-install 10.2 rc2, but since I was cooker current that would take a bit, and expecting 10.2 final out imminately (wish I knew when - if it were more than a few days, I'd just redo 10.2rc2 and put it on correctly..... Thanks for your work and investigation in this!!! - sure is nice!!!!!!!! and any thoughts on how to fix the login loop bug... Kristi <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes, I encountered the same problem today. The login screen is appeared involving many user names (such as admin, root, kdm, halt etc.) and the keyboard was not working after 2-3 second. I could not login KDE. Because of this problem, I had to do the new installation. Edited April 5, 2005 by niti

niti
I installed Mandrake 10.1 official now. Then I upgraded KDE to 3.4 thanks to Thac's packages. Everything is like OK. But I have a new problem now . OS runs level 5. KDE login screen is appeared , but does not log in. I passes this problem changing init level to 3, and then startx in konsole. I am now KDE 3.4. How should I solve this log in problem? I would welcome any idea. One more, Konqueror has the two entries of bookmarks, that is there are double bookmarks. Also, bookmarks are not saved. When I restart pc, my bookmarks are disappear from bookmark window. Thanks. Edited April 8, 2005 by niti
devries
I don't think there is a solution for this problem yet. There are a few things you could try (read thies thread: http://mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=23817&hl=) or try installing gdm (the gnome login manager). MadSad
I have another problem installing kde3.4.. when I go "urpmi kdebase" (as root).. it seems it doesn't do anything.... after I did that on console.. I left my computer for a LONG time... and when I came back... was doing NOTHING...it was at the same point that when I left it... no sing of progress at all.. anything... so.. is this normal?? or I just have a crappy install of mandrake 10.1 official..?? Is it possible update kde using MCC??
scarecrow
@ madsad: You must set all necessary repos before your "urpmi kdebase" (see above), and preferrably upgrade with X not running ( telinit 3 before urpmi kdebase )
