Just alter that file like you have, and do chmod 660 on all audio devices. Edit: can MPD take commands from an IR remote through LIRC? If so, I'll have a look, if not, I'll stick with my xmms setup (see my LIRC/xmms page). My talking hifi never fails to impress any guests...
