hi guys,

i was workin on a new desktop today and was thinking, in windows you can set a html page to your desktop, is this possible in linux, if so how/ what would i need.

the reason being i have set up a windows desktop that has apache on the system and when new stuff like emails arrive, the desktop updates and tells how many emails are there and links to start the program etc etc

any body got any ideas about how to do this in linux, or am i wasting my time trying

thanks in advance

There are other programs that you can use for an email checker. If you're a KDE user, I'm sure superkaramba has some themes that will do it, I know gdesklets has at least 1, and there's always gkrellm.

As for the links to start programs, can you give us an example? It would be really helpful if we had an idea of what you are looking for before we spout off 100 different ideas that aren't even close to what you want.

Superkaramba will run just fine outside of KDE. You need kde installed though, because it uses the qt libs from KDE. gdesklets is the gtk equivalent and requires most, if not all, of gnome to be installed, but it can run outside of gnome once installed. I'm having no luck with gdesklets running on my 10.1 box lately though.

P.S. It's also on the contrib mirrors, so if you use the EasyUrpmi link above and add a contrib source, you can just urpmi superkaramba . No really good themes without following the link from mikeee, though.

well, heres the idea i had.

i run a few websites that have feedback/question forms that email me with the feedback/questions, some of the sites need pretty fast response so i was after a way that as soon as the mail was sent i was alerted. i have tried a few applets (such as the funky thang for gmail that runs on the taskbar - cant remember its name) but i found they would only tell you when you new mail and wouldnt remember how many you had, plus it had a few things missing that i wanted, plus if it could be run as a web page i could add the tag boards to my desktop for all the sites and keep upto date with the tags rather than visiting each site over and over. plus with HTML i could add all the funy things from php/css/dhtml etc etc onto it and make it proper bo as craig david would say

ill look into Superkaramba and let you know how it fairs up

oh yea, im running 10.1 OE with kde 3.2 just incase that will help anybody

cheers guys

Last time i tried karamba outside kde, transparency didnt work, it depends on KDE there.
