An important difference between this and programs like kpdf, is that the real reader supports fillable forms, and kpdf doesn't. Fillable forms are frequently used for things like job applications and tax forms. it's a small feature, but a veryt usefull one.

Also, witht he fillable forms, the real acrobat reader will allow you to save a copy of the form with your info filled in without using the dodgy print to pdf function.

Hello Everybody

as of this writing as most of you (even some web sites such as http://www.scribus.org) thinking,

adobe isn't yet released the official final version of adobe reader 7 for linux,

those who downloaded adobe reader7 was actualy released for

people in the Netherlands meet tax deadlines, proof http://news.com.com/Early+peek+at+Adobe+Re...21398&subj=news

and you can't download adobe reader7 for linux from adobe reader download page

so we can expect much more refinements in official final version of adobe reader.

Fillable forms: how does this work then? Is fillable forms a PDF prog under the ownership of the pdf author? I assume you would need permissions to edit?

I'm intersted in this - I've been trying to use scribus for exactly this purpose, but I can only get access/edit the first page of a multi page doc.

Go to http://www.irs.gov

That's the website for the US Internel Revenue Service (national tax agency) follow the link for "forms and publications" and download a form 1040. There's a 1040i and a 1040f. i is the instruction book for filling out your taxes, f is a fillable form. It's the best example of a fillable form I can offer you.

Alternatively, check out the Job Application packet for Spirit Mountin Casin in Oregon, USA http://www.spirit-mountain.com/employment/...tionpacket.aspx

The 1040, while it requires a litle digging, is an example of an EXCELENT fillable pdf. Teh Spirit Montain job app, is an example of a realy sloppy job app.

As for permissions, the document is made with cells where text can be inserted, but the document as a whole, still cannot be edited. Also, it goes without saying that it requires a fully licensed copy of Adobe Acrobat to make one, Acrobat reader will not due. Last, when authoring one with the latest version of acrobat, you can give permission in the file for the end user to save a filled copy, or you can prohibit that. For some reason, the federal taxe forms can be saved once filled, but when I file my state income taxes, I have to print-to-pdf to save a copy. Fortunately that's no big deal with linux.

VeeDubb, thanks for the examples =-not located the irs one, tried to download the casino jobby but its taking forever-and-a-day at the mo - and i'm on Broadband.

However, what you say above really answers my Q in that the author has to create the form to allow the user to add text; ordinarily (certainly that I've come across) this is not usually the case. Like I say, I've been having some limited success to add text to a PDF doc using Scribus, but at the moment I can't seem to be able to move move beyond the first page - this is on a form which doesn't allow form filling. Guess its still a cse of printing and form filling by hand for now.

ChrisM, you are correct. Most comapnies don't bother to creat the forms. My uinderstanding is that it is a great deal more work that creating a regualr pdf, which to my understanding, is no more difficult than print-to-pdf in linux. Also, I believe it's only been a feature of acrobat for a cuple years, so many companies iwth older version of acrobat, couldn't make forms if they wanted to.
