boot from external USB drive

I have tried suse9.2, Ubuntu and kanotix all on a shuttle with an external HDD.

Its USB2 and the bios settings are boot from external USB HDD second..no IDE disks are installed

 

grub was just dying on Suse and Ubuntu with a kernel panick so eventually I tried kanotix which doies a debian install. It failed in grub and I tried lilo... wghich tells me

 

Kernel panic not synching VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown block (8,3)

Any ideas or help or sympathy welcome!!!
