desktop and menu

Recommended Posts

Thanks for those who help with my last problem it is most appreciated. I believe I have messed things up very badly. While correcting problems i started looking through my menu and found things missing. Under system/cofiguration/hardware, all reference to installing and uninstalling software or any reference to packages available is gone. I have no idea what i did to my box. I also noticed on the desktop that the configure your computer icon is gone. It is the one that normally sits to the right of my terminal icon. I dont know if there is any help other than possibly reinstalling from the beginning but i reall dont want to lose my information already on my harddrive.

I'm not sure how to do this through GUI, but try opening a console and typing

update-menus

Then log out and back in. If that does not work, try doing it as root (things inside <<>> are actions or my comments and you don't actually type them).

<<open a console>>

su <<hit enter>>

<<type your root password and hit enter...you won't see anything being typed>>

update-menus

Then log out and back in. If this does not work, or only works partially, let us know.

Followed your instructions and it did not resolve my problems. Although I think it may be a deeper issue. I tried to urpmi mozilla 1.7.5 and got this error

unable to access rpm file [mozilla-1.7.5-6mdk.i586.rpm]

error registering local packages

not sure if they are related or not.

Ok, sorry, but I have more commandline stuff for you to do for me. Once again, as root in a console, can you do:

rpm -qa | grep -i rpm

(You can copy this by just left-click drag to highlight and then go to your console where you are logged in as root and middle click at the prompt and hit enter.)

i removed and installed urpmi using rpn -Uvh. Then I could perform the add media for main and contrib. I an the command you asked and this is what i got:

rpmtools-5.0.16-1mdk

urpmi-4.6.20-1mdk

rpm-4.2.3-7mdk

rpm-helper-0.9.1-1mdk

perl-URPM-1.09-1mdk

What is the next step?

Save this script to your home directory, make it executable and run it as root from a console:

This will find missing files and replace the pkgs associated with them. As far as missing important pkgs, it won't do that yet, you'll just have to find and reinstall those as you discover which ones they are.

Warning: I understood from one of your previous posts/topics that you are running Cooker. You are going to have problems. Cooker is not stable. Cooker is not meant for newbies. If you still wish to go with it, I hope you can figure alot of stuff out on your own.

how do I make it executable?

As for the cooker, i thank my brother in law for it. He said it will help me with my graphics card drivers. So this is crash course for me. I have made it thru several issues before i got to this point. Thanks for all your help

I tried all kind of ways to get that command to work:

[root@localhost canam97]# $chmod u+x rpmfix.txt

bash: u+x: command not found

[root@localhost canam97]# $chmod u+x rpmfix

bash: u+x: command not found

[root@localhost canam97]# $ chmod u+x rpmfix

bash: $: command not found

Not sure what I am doing wrong.
