UponFirstListen
I've been running Mandrake 10.1 for a few weeks now (dual booting Windows XP, though I haven't seen it in since I got Mdk up and running), but I'm currently experiencing a new problem. At random times, Mandrake decides to logout, forcing me to log back in. I lose everything I'm working on, as there is no option to save any of my work. The background shows full screen, monitor flashes black and then I'm confronted with my login screen. Extremely frustrating to say the least. I wish I could duplicate it, but it happens with no programs running, it happens with programs running, when I'm listening to music, when I'm browsing the internet, seemingly at random. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
daniewicz
Maybe you have a hardware problem? Do a google for memtest86 and download this memory checking tool.
Steve Scrimpshire
Which desktop environment? Look in your ~/.xsessionerrors for anything unusual, or in /var/log/Xorg.0.log Is this by any chance an nvidia card? If so, have you gotten the nvidia drivers from their site yet? If so, which one? Also, do as daniewicz suggests.
UponFirstListen
Memtest was clean. Running KDE, couldn't find xsessionerrors, Xorg.0.log showed nothing out of the ordinary. It is an nVidia board, but I haven't installed any drivers as everything worked on install. I've been doing some more playing and I think it may be Nicotine's fault, but I'm not sure just yet. UponFirstListen
Nicotine is not the cause of all my troubles (thankfully), but they're still there.
daniewicz
Anything of interest in /var/log/XFree86.0.log or /var/log/messages ?
UponFirstListen
No XFree86.0.log in /var/log (or anywhere else that I can see), but /var/log/messages has the following: Â Mar 6 13:19:09 192 kde3(pam_unix)[15067]: session closed for user jason Mar 6 13:19:09 192 kernel: mtrr: 0xd0000000,0x4000000 overlaps existing 0xd0000000,0x100000 Mar 6 13:19:09 192 kernel: drivers/usb/input/usbkbd.c: led urb status -32 received Mar 6 13:19:12 192 kernel: drivers/usb/input/usbkbd.c: led urb status -32 received Mar 6 13:19:16 192 kde3(pam_unix)[22058]: session opened for user jason by (uid=0) Mar 6 13:19:17 192 net_applet[22152]: ### Program is starting ### Mar 6 13:19:17 192 gconfd (jason-22199): starting (version 2.6.4), pid 22199 user 'jason' Mar 6 13:19:18 192 gconfd (jason-22199): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory" to a read-only config source at position 0 Mar 6 13:19:18 192 gconfd (jason-22199): Resolved address "xml:readwrite:/home/jason/.gconf" to a writable config source at position 1 Mar 6 13:19:18 192 gconfd (jason-22199): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults" to a read-only config source at position 2 Â This is repeated about two or three times in the log, which I believe coincides with the logouts, but I won't know until it happens again. UponFirstListen
Just got logged out again and the same sequence of messages appears in my /var/log/messages. I did notice that my playlist in Amarok had just finished, but still not sure if this is coincidental or a conflict of some kind.
daniewicz
I believe gconf is Gnome theme stuff. You are using Gnome rather than KDE? Can you try a different theme within Gnome? Have you tried to update your installation?
UponFirstListen
No, I'm certainly running KDE (3.2). I did find this other post (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?s=&threadid=188246) where a guy had similar error messages in his messages log, but his was related to an ethernet card (mine's working fine). Someone suggested that there's a conflict between KDE and XMMS, which would support my theory with Amarok. However, I don't really see uninstalling XMMS (and, by extension, Amarok) as a viable option. (Not to mention I'm uncertain if it's even the cause of the problem as it was running just fine until recently).
daniewicz
Are there updates to XMMS available from: System Configuration Configure your computer Software Management Updates
UponFirstListen
No "Software Management" (and by extension, "Updates") in Configure Your Desktop. Also, I don't even have XMMS installed (though, I do have libxmms1). Perhaps if I install XMMS it will fix it?
UponFirstListen
It is most certainly Amarok/XMMS related. After allowing another playlist to run until completion I was again logged out and /var/log/messages again showed the same errors. I'm going to install XMMS and give it a try again tomorrow. UponFirstListen
Installed XMMS (via urpmi), loaded up a playlist in Amarok and let it finish. Then, I was logged out. Anyone have any ideas why?
daniewicz
I am still confused by the fact that your don't have a Software Management menu item. Maybe you should try inserting the installation CD#1, rebooting, and selecting the repair option. Something isn't right.
