Gayle
I am connected to Sprint DSL by an ethernet modem. Do I need a router when using only one computer? What are some reliable cheap routers? Thanks for any help!
Guest anon
Do I need a router when using only onecomputer? Nope. Just plug the cable from the modem into the computer.
reb2
as stated above you do not need a router!. but, if you want one, a very cheap router could be obtained with ease........ simply get a cheap pc (old pentium 133mhz) and shove linux on it, and configure it, hey presto cheap router! i ran one for a year, and it did well (just sat in the corner running with no problems at all) i found my old router machine down the local rubbish tip (lol) cost me nothing. (the gear some people throw away!!!). i now have a purpose made router from dlink, it was cheap (£29), its small and does the job well. regards reb
Gayle
Thanks for the replies. The main reason I was asking about routers was security.
kmack
Personally, I'd recommend using a router if you can afford it. They are fairly cheap, easy to plugin and use, and you never know when a friend will come by with a laptop and you can share the connection with them. They are good for lots of things and do add a bit of security. :D
DragonMage
Buying the router could be the best 50 dollars you ever spend. Not only that it alleviates most of the hustle of networking setup, it adds a second layer of security. In fact, you can make your home desktop a LAN server while still protected from the internet by the router.
