Router necessary

as stated above you do not need a router!.

 

but, if you want one, a very cheap router could be obtained with ease........

simply get a cheap pc (old pentium 133mhz) and shove linux on it, and configure it, hey presto cheap router!

i ran one for a year, and it did well (just sat in the corner running with no problems at all)

i found my old router machine down the local rubbish tip (lol) cost me nothing.

(the gear some people throw away!!!).

i now have a purpose made router from dlink, it was cheap (£29), its small and does the job well.

Personally, I'd recommend using a router if you can afford it. They are fairly cheap, easy to plugin and use, and you never know when a friend will come by with a laptop and you can share the connection with them. They are good for lots of things and do add a bit of security. :D

Buying the router could be the best 50 dollars you ever spend. Not only that it alleviates most of the hustle of networking setup, it adds a second layer of security. In fact, you can make your home desktop a LAN server while still protected from the internet by the router.
