EDIT 19MAR05 you will need to get the 20050315 driver if you have the 2.6.11-1mdk kern (MDK10.2) (also 2.6.11-2) ALWAYS CHECK the download page to get the latest driver!!! Michel Xhaard did all the hard work on this and seems to be keeping it right up to date. "this module is now known as spca5xx and has support for 124 webcams." Recent comment from the author: PS i will release soon spcaview my "swiss tools" for the spca5xx and other webcams :) spcaview can ask the kernel through v4l to get the mjpeg stream directly from the hardware ( for example your Labtec Pro) and result in a better performance and decrease the kernel load :))-- Michel Xhaard List of cameras supported: http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca5xx.html Download page: http://mxhaard.free.fr/download.html Pay attention to the "quality" column there when thinking about a cam - my Labtec Pro is 5 star and great!!! If you have already installed the NVIDIA drivers, ignore this step. Get the APPROPRIATE kernel source: Do uname -r to find the kernel module level of your system. In root: Menu, System, Configuration, Packaging, Browse available Software: Look for the source that matches your system. (e.g. linux-2.6.x.x-xmdk (linux-2.6.11-1mdk for 10.2rc1) ) Click install. This will get the source, copy the config and create the link in /usr/src. Look in /usr/src/ to make sure the kern source matches your /lib/modules release number EXACTLY. Download the latest spca5xx tarball (see link above). Expand it (I just click on it and use expand here). this will create a directory similar to /home/<user>/USB_PC_Cam/spca5xx-20050301 In a root console, CD to that folder. Do "make" there should be no errors. (takes a minute to do the compiles) Do "make install" there should be no errors. (takes only maybe 10 seconds) At this point you need to reboot. To check your install: After you have rebooted, do "lsmod" in a console. Among a bunch of other stuff, you should see: spca50x 243640 0videodev 7168 2 cx8800,spca50x Gqcam does a really nice job of displaying it. Gnomemeeting works very well. Camstream is spasmodic at best with this driver. In my system in v4l, it's video1 since video0 is my TV (cx880) Hope that helps! Kristi PM me with suggestions for changes to this. I just ordered a 5 star cam. We'll see! Yep!!! I looked for a "5 star" camera and ordered the Labtec webcam Pro ($20+shpg, 2 days from Provantage) and Linux gqcam gives me an EXCELLENT picture. The cam sits nicely where ever I put it and slides back and forth in the base for different angles. the focus knob is slow and smooth and focuses to very close. Definitely a YAYYYYYYYYYYYY! theo Posted April 13, 2005 Report Share Posted April 13, 2005 I confirm, my Labtec webcam Pro rocks like a charm with the spca5xx driver. Just follow the readme file to proceed to the installation. I'm waiting now for an apllication to make video conference with the ô so many msn users ... It seems to exist an experimental extension for Gaim but I don't have try it yet ...
