Also, if we change lanes to noobie, like for example:

"JoeBob noobie shouldn't have to know that while compiling (yeah right) Program A, and then trying to run the program as user Root, with an error that comes back saying "YOU CAN"T RUN THIS AS ROOT, CREATE A NEW USER AND LOGIN FELLOW!"

1.) JoeBob is either smart enough to figure out the error means don't do it this way, do it that way.

2.) JoeBob just doesn't have a clue so he comes to Forum or IRC and says why does this say I can't use root? 30-40 IRC/Forum users respond back, JoeBob, dude, silly fellow, don't run it as root, make a user and only su - to do root commands.

3.) low JoeBob, "dammit, I'm going back to windows"

4.) Average JoeBob says, " ok, I just learned something today. thx"

5.) Higher JoeBob says, "but why?"

6.) Geek JoeBob says, "thats crap, I'm going to install the source, edit it and do what ever the hell I want, and said a dirty gram to the developers and tell them he has just made a fork of there project because he doesn't like there way of doing it.

7.) /me moves on with his life and forgets all the root accounts he has seen and closes his eyes :o

Well here is my take on root having his/her hands tied.

I don't like it, Root is Root for the good and the bad of it.

This is what make Linux so Great! But when a programmer denies access at a root

level it make it kinda commercial.. Granted with linux becoming so popular, alot of

Newbies don't really understand the Power of being Root.. But we don't need programmers

to hold our hands. Sometimes the best way to learn is BY making mistakes...

Also it you want to run as Root all the time, that's on you if you feel safe doing so

than go for it. :D

sad to see people complain about software patents run ileagal software but think it is ok to tell root he can't do something

Let me ask you this then, should I be pissed at RedHat/Fedora for the following?

rm /etc/hosts
rm: remove write-protected regular file `/etc/hosts'? n

rm /etc/passwd /etc/shadow
rm: remove regular file `/etc/passwd'? n
rm: remove regular file `/etc/shadow'? n

Are they telling me I can't or are they suggesting that I shouldn't? If they are only suggesting that I shouldn't do this, should I still be pissed at them for even the thought of the suggestion?

There's a big difference between SUGGESTING not to do something . And being told flat out you can't do it. So in my opinion i wouldn't be Pissed at Fedora for Suggesting but then again that's just my opinion..

is that an actual question? really?

Yes it was, it was even formed in the way a question is asked. :P

Well, I'm root, I know what I'm doing and they shouldn't ask me anything, they should just let me do what ever I want. Essentially, they are holding/tieing my hands, aren't they? Otherwise I should have been able to delete those files.

/me goes back to saying, it's there software, they can do what they want, and the user can do what they want.

and again: should root have his/her hand tied? NO Thats why your root and thats why they give you the source.

We can argure about this tell were blue in the face but the answer is still the same, if you have root access and you have the source than your hands are not tied.

end of story............................................

He/she's not denying access unless he/she witholds the source ...

You wanna take other peoples work they have given you for FREE and then complain it doesn't do something silly in the first place.

Imagine they want to write a gnutella client that filters out porn and call it kiddy-gnutella or whatever...

What is wriong with that.... its their project and if they wanna filter porn or even Casablanca because they think it sucks then its up to them.

If you don't want a p2p client which won't download porn (or casablanca) then use something else....

If they want they can hardcode an access password and you must type 'gtk-gnutella developers are clever' every time you download something... its really up to them.

(1) What's the difference between telling a user that he can't run a program as root and telling him he can't run it as regular user?

(2) Since, by design, Linux gives you big red flags, warnings and whistles when you log into X as root, Joe Blow would have to work awful hard to get to the point where he has no choice but to run said program as root. I don't see how the developers are tying anyone's hands any more than your Linux distribution itself does.

What does one have to do with the other? Are you saying there are people in this topic that 'complain about software patents run ileagal software but think it is ok to tell root he can't do something'? Are you saying that anyone who thinks it's ok to tell root not to do anything runs 'ileagal' software and/or complains about software patents?

IT pro's ? hehe ...who might that be? 18.gif not here on this forum, and definately not in this thread wink.gif wana make it personal? that's a no no

Um, he didn't make it personal...he was stating a fact and you're trying to make it personal by insulting the intelligence/knowledge of everyone on this forum and in this thread.
