Guest ickith
I have read the excellent installation tutorial by SteveAmbrose, one of my main reasons to want to try Mandrake is this understandable and friendly forum (as I was going to use Mepis after trying their livecd, but the forums on mepis are for poeple who already know what to do) And I jsut want some reassurance.... what I want to do is to install Mandrake on my new 20GB second hard drive and to duel boot it with Windows 2000 on drive C: I have backed up, but I really dont wanna have to install my windows programs, as there are a lot of them. Plus I dont like starting from scratch, you lose the soul of the computer that way, the familiar personality. what I want to know is, will I have an easy ride if I jsut try to install the 3 Mandrake 10.2 cds? do I have to do it like the tutorial and install Madnrake 9.1 first? the most important thing is... will I still be able to boot windows after putting Mandrake in? are there problems with duel booting with windows 2000 that I need to know about? will I have to wipe the hard disk (C:)? what are the chances of that? thank you -Eric
ChrisM
Hi ickith Welcome to the MUB. I think an excellent start for you would be to check out aRTee's web site mandraketips4free - it will explain so much for you, as well as guiding you through the install process. Its a great resource - one of the best. I wouldn't go for 10.2 - this is beta version and will be buggy. Try 10.0 or 10.1 instead. You'll be able to dual boot no problem, the Mandrake install will take care of all the partitioning. Just remember that you'll need to first back all your important data up, and before installing you'll need to defrag your drive. I have a dual boot alongside XP on my work computa - what you'll find is that when you boot up, you'll be given a menu screen to select your preffered OS - if after about 8 seconds you don't make a selection, it defaults to Mandrake. Good luck.
bvc
I agree. Being your first time, I wouldn't go with a beta. As for the other questions? There's no guarantee's. If bad stuff didn't happen we wouldn't be here. That's what backups are for. What are your specs?

Padma
Your specs sound quite similar to mine. (Yours are a little better, My system is older, & I am on a tight budget ;) ) I have had absolutely no problem dual-booting with Win2K and Mdk10.0 -> 10.1. For that matter, I never had any problem dual-booting WIndows and Mdk 9.2, 9.1, 9.0, 8.2, ... etc. ;) :D
Guest ickith
woooo! well installing madrake was, err invigorating was lil mix up over bootloader didnt know how to boot from floppy only 1 floppy which was a boot disk to repair windows which didnt work as a boot disk and also wasnt formatted so couldnt put linux boot on it, said would damage file structure when I installed lilo as bootloader and didnt have option for windows boot I didnt panic but found the option in comppuer management I think where I could play with the bootloaders I clicked next on the lilo bootloader on hda and removed the boot option with the star next to it then I started the bootloader management thing again and selected Grub instead of lilo and it had option to add windows and then I added linux thanks for the reassurance and it was all set I jsut selected the default drives when prompted and now I can duel boot OMG!!!!!!
