which PC is compatible with mandrake 10 + ?

Since I bought a new PC 2 years ago

I was able to install Mandrake 9.1 then impossible to install MDK 10.+

It was a good idea to propose a new PC with mandrake for 299 euros but it should be better to point out another couple of PC's

one for the basic beginner, one for the family and one for the special purposes and games

this is the least Linux should do if we want to compete on fair grounds with MS

the majority of windows users, where I belong, is not able to choose a proper compatible Linux PC

I had to turn to suse 9.0 then 9.1 which accept my video card "ATI Radeon IGP 320 (M)"

but not completely so it remains a slight flickering of the screen

I will keep windows until I can find a ready made PC fully compatible with Linux

how long will it take for Linux to indicate the type of PC usable with Linux ?

Any modern PC can run Linux, including Mandrake !

Nvidia are the best supported cards but ATI are improving their Linux support. In fact am running an ATI radeon X300 with the new PCI Express standard. Took a bit of config but it works perfectly.

You don't say why you couldn't install MDK 10,.? What was the problem?

Unless you have a custom made PC it should not be a problem.

Yea...the only hardware I've heard of that doesn't work well is ATI...and I got a Radeon 9200 that never required any configuration at all...it just works. My soundcard doesn't...but...I never attempted to fix that yet...lol...it's a soundblaster live! 5.1, so...my built in mobo sound works though :-P

  • 2 months later...

the problem is a steady freeze of mouse and keyboard at any time during the install process of mandrake 10.0

on my three computers (nothing special about them)

I tried more than one set of install C's to no avail..

i tried more than ten times with each

I just wonder why i seem to be the only one with install troubles on MDK ....

I have just reinstalled my ompaq laptop Armada 100S with MDK 9.1...

I have been working 2 years with the suse 9.0, 9.1 and 9.2 with no install problems

thanks for your help

If you can list the motherboards and which cards are installed we can probably help further.

Carrefour were doing Mandrake pre-installed PC's for about €299 if I remember but you need to order online i think. I can't find them anymore?

uklinux.net are offering pre installed PCs (mini ITX):

http://www.uklinux.net/linuxpcs/

The web page is under construction, but there are links to access .pdf docs re: spec's etc.

From an ad in a Linux magazine, its not the prettiest of PCs but it comes with linux pre installed (don't know what flavour - I haven't read the docs). Don't know if they would be shipped or not?

carrefour doesn't sell them anymore

they were really basic machines and I noticed the linux computers are usually sold at a higher price than the others

Chris M : your address is OK but they only deliver in the UK

Just a thought which is probably far too obvious to be the root of the problem:

You say you've tried a number of different sets of CDs, but did you burn them all from the same downloaded images?

If so did you check the Md5 sums?

It seems there must be a common factor causing the lock ups during install. Perhaps it's the downloaded ISO files?

If suse works well up to 9.2 (latest freely available for the time being), then why do you say that Linux has catching up to do?

If anything, it sounds like Mdk has catching up to do with SUSE in terms of supporting your hardware, not Linux compared to MSWin.
