well it's been years since i fooled with linux, but i built a fast machine and i want to run an ocean/atmosphere model i can get from the goddard space center. i have to be running a good fortran compiler and the fed ex man just brought the lahey/fujitsu disk. from the old days i only knew about red hat. when i tried to load it it would nor recognize my serial ata disk. someone on another forum tells me red hat is old hat. so i have order a mandrake 10.1 cd. i found a web page that says mandrake is compatible with this kind of disk, so i'm keeping my fingers crossed. i'm sure i'll be back here whining and crying and begging for help....doc :jester:

Good luck. The only problem this noob had was a USR modem which wasn't recognized. I was fortunate enough to have an NVidia graphics card, and experienced no trouble with it. I have heard of folks who had installation trouble with ATI cards.

There are lots of friendly people here if you need help.
