/lib/modules directory [solved]

I have an MDK 10.1 machine that has inadvertently lost it's /lib/modules directory.

I assume this will take a reinstallation to repair this if a backup does not exist.

This was on /dev/hdb1

Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hdb1             5.8G  4.1G  1.4G  75% /
/dev/hdb6              12G  359M   12G   4% /home
/dev/hda6              46G   11G   33G  25% /mnt/storage
/dev/hda1             4.0G  806M  3.3G  20% /mnt/win_c
/dev/hda5              62G  4.0G   58G   7% /mnt/win_d
/dev/hdc              228M  228M     0 100% /mnt/cdrom

An installation is not a problem, but I thought I might learn something in edition to not deleting directories inadvertently.

P.S. it was not deleted in KDE so it is no in the trash!

have you taken a deep look into your root environment? most files are not deleted instantly but deleted... umm.. how do i describe it?... "temporarily". there should still be some files somewhere left (i guess hidden) from where you could possibly restore them.

anyways: don't delete complete folders from your partition as root. especially do not remove anything outside of your /home folder.... this is kinda suicide. :hanged:

think positive. at least you learned something. :D

maybe this thing helps you a bit:

Yeah definately was.

I was SSH'ed in a slow connection and trying to clean up IVTV.

Using tab for name expansion I hit enter apparently at the wrong moment.

Sad part is, I know better.

Here is why I am toast! Thread closed other than those that would like to take "Pop Shots" at my stupidity.

# /sbin/debugfs /dev/hdb1

debugfs 1.35 (28-Feb-2004)

debugfs: lsdel

Inode Owner Mode Size Blocks Time deleted

0 deleted inodes found.

No inodes showing, no fixing.

Now that I have publicly made my shame known, I can progress with a clear conscious.

Hahahaha.

Well I figure that if I screw up, I may as well make it fun!

The other nice part about this, is that nobody will be asking me for help.

I should have alot of free time to read the forums!

If it is not too late, I suppose you could reinstall the kernel RPM.

You'll have to boot a rescue CD, then mount the / partition, then rpm -i /path/to/kernel.rpm, not forgetting the rpm option for the files to be relocated (else the kernel will be installed in the rescue environment). And if RPM is not part of your rescue environment, you may try to use a tool such as rpm2cpio, and then cpio to get all the files.

Unfortunately its too late. I haven been posting my followup from that machine. That would have been an excellent recovery option. I just didnt have the knowledge at the time of the event. I need to spend more time with RPM syntax.

Excellent Solution though.
