Upgrading Firefox [solved]

Disclaimer: I am a total newbie to linux. :)

I installed Firefox using urpmi (that Easy URPMI site is great btw), however is the preview version. There do not appear to be any rpms available for Firefox 1.0 for Mandrake 10.1, so I downloaded the installer. However when I run the installer I want to be sure that I am upgrading my old version rather than just creating another version. How do I do this? I don't even know how to find the directory in which Firefox is currently installed.

Also in a somewhat-but-not-really related note, I like how installing rpm packages takes care of things like adding the icons to your start menu and adding the appropriate directories to my path. I don't suppose there is any way that there is an easy way to do this when I have to compile and install the packages manually?

Any help would be appreciated. I'm eager to learn, thanks!

You can use the package from the mozilla website to install another version of firefox to a different directory but if I were you I'd remove your old versoin first using urpme <package>. This will not get rid of any of your settings as they are installed in your /home/ directory.

If you are not comfortable installing the firefox program from the tar.gz file supplied by firefox then look for an RPM package of firefox 1.0 for MDK 10.1. I found some at

http://norlug.org/?op=rpms

copy the appropriate rpms to a directory.

Then as root run

urpmi /path/to/file/filename.rpm

This will ensure that all the dependancies are found (if any) and incorporate firefox into the MDK menus.

When started, the new version of firefox will pick up all of your settings. It may tell you that some of your themes or extensions from the previous version will not longer work but the program will run as before.

Crispus

Worked like a charm! Thanks for the help. The only thing I did different was adding NORLUG to my uprmi repository then used it for installation (as they suggested on their site). I never knew about urpme before so thanks for that.

Cheers!
