usb keyboard not working in lilo

I installed Mandrake 10.1 as my second operating system next to Windows XP. The installation went fine and I was able to get into Mandrake and Windows fine. But every time I boot up my computer (or restart)and I get to the Lilo splash screen to choose which operating system I want to use, my keyboard does not work so I cant choose. I tried my old PS2 keyboard and it works. After I get into either Mandrake or Windows the USB keyboard works fine.

I tried looking through the forums and online for any previous posts but couldn't find too much on it. I already have USB keyboard and USB mouse enabled in my BIOS settings. Does anyone else know what might be causing this?

Sorry im pretty new to Linux so any help would be greatly appreciated

[»] USB keyboard and LILO

by mitchd - Apr 7th 2002 11:39:37

Hi,

Does anyone know if they will ever be USB support in Lilo ?

I currently have to keep two keyboards around. My usb one,

and another ps2 type if i ever need to select another boot

image.

Anyone know of any other boot loaders which work with USB

keyboards ?

Thanx

M

LILO contains NO device drivers. All I/O is performed by the BIOS. This includes disk I/O and keyboard I/O. Unless your BIOS provides support on int 16h for the USB keyboard, you will not be able to use it with LILO.

I have the same problem :). In the end I dug up an old USB/PS2 converter..... Maybe it is time to upgrade my motherboard.

I have the same identical prob. I just bought the latest MS ergonomic USB keyboard. Since it's more advanced, it should work better, right? Wrong. Now I can't boot to Windows, since the down arrow key doesn't work in Lilo. Well, at least it's good to know I'm not alone. Tomorrow I will find out if Radio Shack carries a USB to PS2 convertor? : P

You may well have already tried this, however it did work for me, enable usb keyboard but disable usb mouse in the bios settings (the OS will take care of the mouse once booted). Admittedly I use Grub, but it should not make a difference.

Failing that, as devries suggests, a USB to PS/2 adapter will also work.
