YaAqoB
Hello all. For some reason my PC won't start into X. It starts directly into a terminal. If I type startx I get an error. The error is in the following log. Guest J2Dope
im no expert by any means... but when you installed MDK, after all your selected packages are installed, did u configure *and* test your graphics display driver thingy? YaAqoB
Yep. I have had the proper Nvidia drivers running for about a month now. Just all of a sudden it won't load now. Not sure what has changed. I'm thinking its something simple. Like it says its loading the screen0 but in the config file its screen1. If you have any other clues please let me know. Ixthusdan
You have installed something that has affected the nvidia installation. Reinstall the nvidia driver. If you want to verify that x is not at fault, edit the /etc/X11/xfconfig file to read "nv" rather than "nvidia" and see if the gui comes up. If it does, just reinstall nvidia. YaAqoB
Hey wicked, thanks for your advice. I changed back to the NV and now it will start. Ixthusdan
This tells me that you have loaded a new kernel for the system and have not replaced or updated the sources. Your kernel sources must match the running kernel for any software to compile correctly on the machine. When you loaded the new kernel, the nvidia driver stopped working because it was compiled against a different kernel. Please post the conrent of your /etc/lilo.conf file. Ixthusdan
You show 2 kernels, 2.6.8.1-10 and 2.6.8.1-12. You need to install a file called kernel-source-2.6.8.1-12mdk.i586.rpm (or something similar to this) and install it. Then, boot the new kernel and run the nvidia installer again. I think 10 was the default release and 12 was a bug release. Install the sources and you'll be fine.
YaAqoB
Thanks for that. Do you know where I can get this file? If I try to use urpmi it tells me every thing is already installed and I can't find it on the net. Cheers
bvc
uname -r will tell you what kernel you are using rpm -qa | grep kernel will tell you what kernel pkgs you have installed. If what is installed does not match the running kernel then uninstall it or them. Then try urpmi kernel-source If needed after that, use google or these links to find the right kernel-source, manually download it and install it with (as root) rpm -ivh kernel-source-x.x.x.mdk.ixxx.rpm (x's being for the version) http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/2/simple/2 http://rpmfind.net/ http://www.rpmseek.com/index.html Edited January 10, 2005 by bvc
Guest anon
Your have two kernels so you must have installed one or added another by upgrading. Tip. To find out which kernel you are actually using, open a consol and type uname -r You can delete the other one. Ixthusdan
That is not the correct file. The file is named "kernel-source-2.4.6-blahblah" The file you are installing is a source file for compiling a kernel. It is different. The kernel-source is a regular rpm, not a .src rpm. GO HERE
YaAqoB
Good morning. I downloaded the rpm from your link, and tried to install it. It told me it was already installed. I then uninstalled the existing one and the older version and then installed the rpm. I then tried to install the nvidia drives as per normal but i still get the same kernel errors. Any other ideas?? Thanks for all your help so far by the way.
