I semi-successfully installed 10.1 on an oldish laptop. However, when I attempt to boot, x doesn't start. So, I tried startx and receive the following error message...

Fatal server error:

no screens found

X10: Fatal IO Error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X Server ":0.0"

After 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining

Any idea whats going on?

Your X config isn't set up properly. Either use drakconf to try and sort it out (should be doable on the command line) or, if you know the details for your monitor, mouse etc you can run xconfig and see if you can get it set up that way.

If you find that the config asks you for detaisl you don;t knwo then you can always ctrl-c and find out before starting again...

it sounds like your video/monitor isn't conffiged correctly. when you boot & get to the prompt, login as root. to do so, type..........

su

hit enter

then type the root password (hit enter). then type the following.......

XFdrake

hit enter

that CaPs sensitive, too. that will run the X config module for your video settings. make sure you pick the correct driver (or something compatable) for your card, check the monitor refresh & res settings, then use the "test" feature after setting it up. if it passes the test, you're ok. if not, keep trying diffferent video card drivers until you get one that works. the default choice that MDK uses for some cards sometimes isn't always the correct choice.
