Manrake 10.1 official download.

GeForce4 MX 4000

I have installed these drivers hundreds of times... but I am lost on this one.

Installed the nvidia driver 6629 and end up with the nvidia splash screen stuck on the desktop and can't do nothing to work around it.

So I instead... installed the nvidia driver 5336 and all seems fine. This is the one that has worked with previous two versions on my machine. The gui looks good and glxgears works and reports a framerate I expect.

I reboot and the nvidia driver dissappears. I get these errors:

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module!
(EE) NVIDIA(0):  *** Aborting ***
(II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"
(II) UnloadModule: "vgahw"
(II) Unloading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libvgahw.a
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

I have added nvidia to the modprobe.preload file and I tried the custom screen setting I have always used before and also tried a bunch of others, for which my monitor is not in the list.

thanks,

hmm, this sounds a bit crazy, but I wonder if at the point where it worked you were using the nvidia *kernel* module from 6629 but everything else from 5336, and that was the combination that did the trick? after the reboot, you'd probably be using the kernel module from 6629. Maybe you could try to contrive the mismatch again and see if it works.
