Mandrake 10.1 install problems

Ok people, I'm totally new to linux, so please guide me here. I've just installed Mandrakelinux 10.0 (download), and having trouble installing the nvidia driver. I have no idea what to do in linux (mere basic commands), can somebody tell me exactly how to install this driver, so I can learn linux from within the GRAPHICAL desktop? This guide including whatever kernel sources to be downloaded, everything. I, like I said, have a fresh install of mandrakelinux 10.1, that's it.

PS: About editing the files, please just tell me what files to edit and what to write, what kernel source to download (?). I think I can figure out how vi works, so the editing itself should be fine.

here is a detailed howto:

http://www.mandrakeusers.org/index.php?showtopic=4567

if you run into problems, tell us exactly what you were doing and what exactly went wrong. the more detailed the information you give us, the easier it is to fix the stuff.

good luck. :)

edit: uh... i forgot: welcome aboard

Yep, that's the guide I used. I believe the problem is during the "urdpmi kernel-source" command. The "urdpmi binutils" command returns "Already installed", but the "urdpmi kernel-source" command requires the installation dvd. I load the dvd, but then it returns "Wrong signature" (or something like that), and can't install whatever it's suppose to install (get the meaning of novice, right? :D). When I proceed to install the driver I get an error message saying something like "wrong driver/kernel source".

I've got an AMD Athlon 64 processord, but I'm using Mandrakelinux 10.1 official, (not 64-bit). What driver should I use, I've downloaded all. :)

Am I suppose to download a new kernel-source? I've read a little bit about linux, but this kernel-source thingy has completely passed my mind.

Sorry if my information is a bit inadequate, I'm at work now and playing on pure memorisation. :D

Thanks for all help!

check out post #2 HERE for Nvidia driver install "how to". it's written for earlier versions of the drivers, but the info still applies.

also note, there's a bug with some installs of MDK10.1 concerning Nvidia & udev. if you find that after installing the drivers X won't start, check the following file......

/etc/modprobe.preload

if it isn't in there, simply add nvidia to the file under the header somewhere. you can edit this file using vi or vim should you not have access to a GUI text editor.

Thanks for all help, I believe I'm beginning to understand how it works now. I've browsed the web all day reading different helpforums, the linux community (and mandrake) is really big! Bet my next problem occurs with installing my 3com usb wireless network adapter, but I found a guide here wich I think could work: Mandrakeusers - WLAN

Any comments on that guide?

Hope I can get this to work, I really want to try out Linux for real. :thanks:
