Poor serif fonts in Konqueror

The Register looks very blocky in Konqueror (mandrake 10.1 - upgraded from 10.0).

 

 

The font family being used in their stylesheet is

"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;"

 

Here's my font config.

 

I've recompiled and installed freetype with the Apple rendering algorithms switched on. Any pointers?

Problem solved.

 

1. remove the xorg-x11-100dpi and xorg-x11-75dpi packages (they have crappy helvetica and serif fonts)

2. download and install the ms-font rpms from http://webperf.org/msfonts/

urpmi msfonts-1.2.1-1.noarch.rpm

urpmi msfonts-style-1.2.1-1.noarch.rpm

 

3. edit /etc/fonts/local.cf - add all of your font directories

here's mine:

 

<dir>/usr/share/fonts/msfonts</dir>

<dir>/usr/share/fonts/msfonts-style</dir>

<dir>/usr/share/fonts/default/ghostscript</dir>

<dir>/usr/share/fonts/ttf</dir>

<dir>/usr/share/fonts/Dustismo</dir>

<dir>/usr/share/fonts/ttf/decoratives</dir>

<dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/msttcorefonts</dir>

<dir>/usr/local/share/fonts</dir>

<dir>/usr/share/fonts</dir>

<dir>/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts</dir>

 

4. fc-cache -f -v

 

5. restart your window manager (ctrl+alt+backspace )

Voila! No more crappy fonts when looking at The Register in Konqueror:

 

Note that this problem occured when I upgraded via urpmi from 10.0 official to 10.1 official. Your mileage may vary.

I got the same problem and solved it by merely importing the ms fonts in kde control center>System>Font Installer. No further editing was necessary. It works pretty easy if you have windows installed on another partition.

No, I imported as root for system wide installation. I've done it twice now on two different boxes and it works like a charm. I created a subfolder in /usr/local/share/fonts/ttf called MSFonts and imported the ms fonts there.

Just upgraded from Mandrake 9.0 -> 10.1 with fresh install! (I haven't used Mandrake for a long long long time ).

 

Anyway the "usual" method for font import Configure your computer->system->fonts->import is very tedious and has to be done individually for each font unlike in the earlier version, where you could choose all the fonts and it it was imported. In my install of 10.1 the font importer hangs during the checking phase.

 

To get all my windows font from the Windows XP font folder working in this version of Mandrake I copied *.ttf from c:\windows\fonts to /usr/share/fonts/ttf/Windows, then ran Configure your computer->system->fonts. Al the copied fonts showed up.

 

All the fonts were recognized systemwide, and show up in Open Office, Firefox and Konqueror. So far these are the only programs I've cheked them with (too busy updating and trying to get my Nvidia card running stably ). As a bonus it also cured my Firefox font problems.
