NVIDIA [solved]

hi
i have mandrake 10.1 ce and as you know CE doesn't have nvidia drivers.then i downloaded the latest driver nvidia 6629 ia32 . however x server doesn't start and i have just black screen now:( i use plug n monitor.
my question are;
1) what should i have to run nvidia driver? or do i have need extra packages?
2) Failed to initialize GLX extension (NVIDIA X driver not found) i have this error at Xorg.0.log as shown below:

As stated above this is a problem:

Did you edit your config file to use the nvidia driver? If you have, one problem I've noticed in 10.1 is that the nvidia driver doesn't load even though it's listed in /etc/modprobe.conf. To see if this is your problem, boot up to a command line login and log in as root. Then run the following commands:

 

# modprobe nvidia

# int 5

 

That will manually load the nvidia driver and start X.

I notice from your original log that the config file is xorg.conf. Yet your last post was XF86Config,

 

You are editing the correct config file aren't you?

 

I'm no expert on X but I do remember being told that the config uses either xorg.conf, XF86Config or XF86Config-4.

That's the problem I was referring to; your nvidia driver is not loading. After doing modprobe nvidia, you should also be able to start X as an ordinary user. Or you can just run "init 5" as root which should start up your login screen. You'll probably also notice that there is a line in /ect/modproble.conf to load the nvidia driver but it doesn'y work. Confirn all the above.

 

Your config file is fine. In mdk10.1 xorg.conf is a symlink to XF86Config so you can edit either one; it makes no difference since they refer to the same file.

 

Here's the only way I could get the nvidia driver to autoload in mdk10.1. Edit /etc/rc.d/rc.modules by adding these lines at the very end:

 

#Load nvidia module
modprobe nvidia

 

You need to be root to edit the file.
