Take a looksee at the gdesklets at the top of the screen, the left one is a window list, the one on the right has time, battery, volume and a window menu, the one underneath it, a notification area/system tray. You can click the tab on the end of them and they hide away, with the tab becoming transparent. Theres a hidden one in the bottom right.
