Success!! ATI Radeon Drivers on Mandrake 10.1

K.. i'm completely new to Linux (as in, 3 days.. never touched before).  I followed these directions (kinda) and it seemed to work.  i run that fgl cube thang and i get around 700fps, but from what little i've seen on other boards, that seems slow for my computer (AMD64 3200 w/ a radeon 9800 pro, 1g ram).  i think its running in agp 2.. (not certain, but i followed ati's directions on finding out if you are running in pci or agp and it had a 2 next to the agp module).  am i missing something?

I agree it should be running faster, given your setup, but ... I dunno. ???

 

also, why does the command above to run gears have "$" in front?  in a set of instructions to install something else i had the same thing.  i tried it and just got an error.. if i didn't have the "$" it worked just fine.

The "$" is a shorthand code indicating the command is run as a normal user. If you look at your command line prompt, you will note that it (by default) ends with "$". ;)

 

(BTW: the shorthand code indicating the command should be run as root is a "#". ;) )

 

  also, same w/ "./".  i've tried searching but it's really  hard to search on single letter commands.  sorry for sounding like such a newb ;)  (oh, i'm running mandrake 10.1)

"./" is actually part of the command - the path to the command you want to run. The assumption is you are in the directory where the command resides. The assumption also is that your current directory (".") is not necessarily in your PATH, where executables can be found, so it is specified as "./<command>". Since fgl_glxgears is in the "/bin" directory, you do not need to include the "./" prefix to run it, as "/bin" is in your PATH, by default. (For that matter, it will only work using "./" if you are currently in the "/bin" directory. ;) )

So, I'm guessing that 3D still won't work with a Radeon X800, which is at the helm of this box. If it does, I'll give this a go. I've 2 weeks into using Mdk 10.1- not everything works perfectly, but I'm impressed, and the only real problem I have at the moment is my graphics card. I understand that the drivers are gonna put a permanent limit on my performance, at least until better ones come out (in a few years, it would seem). So, I'm guessing that if I were to follow the instructions and they all worked, I'd still be left without OpenGL. I don't suppose anyone can prove me wrong, and make my day by saying that 3D rendering with an X800 in 10.1 is possible?

I talked a buddy into using MDK instead of Ubuntu. He had ATI working just great in Ubuntu and for the life of him and me (been ssh'ed into his pc) we cannot get the drivers to work. We done the steps over and over. Installing doing the step then not having it work then uninstalling with rpm -e and doing it over again. Still nothing.

 

I have no idea what to post because there are no errors during the whole install only a I/O error when trying to startx.

17/01 ATI done the fglrx drive 8.8.25-1 for Xorg 6.8.0. I now running with the 3.14.6 drivers ok. The new drivers blink my screen and crash the Xorg with some core dumps.

I use Mandrake 10.1 that is shiped with Xorg 6.7 and the new ATI drives are for Xorg 6.8. If somebody know how to intall this in Xorg 6.7 I want to know too please.

Tymestream like I said we did all the steps. I even ssh'ed into his pc and looked at the XF86Config and I could see the fglrx as the driver for the card. Wouldn't start until I changed it back to "radeon".

 

I have one question though about the 24 bit for the vid settings. Should it be 16 bit instead? fglrxconfig only seems to give you a 24 bit option.

 

Of course I have really no idea what else to do. Like I said no warnings when installing the driver. He is running 10.1 also.

 

Maybe if you could post your XFConfig file that might help so I can compare the two.

Somebody know why the UT2004 Demo (Both versions) crashs about 10 minutes of online playing?

It seens to only occur when the Display Settings have All in Highest and High and Trilinear. With Trilinear disabled and All in Normal its never crashed. Is lock or the High settings overflow something?

Everyday is a new day with new things happen... :cheeky:

 

The crashs with UT2004 is resolved with Option "UseFastTLS" "2".

 

Today I have installed xorg 6.8.0 from urpmi cookers on my mdk10.1. Now the fglrx-4.3.0-3.14.6 that are running on xorg 6.7 don`t running in 6.8 and fglrx_6_8_0-8.8.25-1 don`t works too. Blinks the screen and go to text mode with some core dumps.

I don`t know how many time I will survive without play my 3D games, so please, HELPPPPPPPPPP...

To let easy 4 every one:

 

as root:

$ rpm -e fglrx* ($ rpm -qa|grep fglrx to know the rest of the name)

$ rm -rf /lib/modules/fglrx

 

$ rpm --replacefiles -ivh --force fglrx_6_8_0-8.8.25-1.i386.rpm (www.ati.com)

 

(if you kernel is 2.6.10, if is 2.6.11 see the link above. $ cat /proc/sys/kernel/osrelease to know the kernel)

cd /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod

patch -p0 < fglrx-kernel2.6.10.patch (http://www.stanford.edu/~fenn/linux/fglrx-kernel2.6.10.patch to download the patch)

 

cd /lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod

sh make.sh

cd /lib/modules/fglrx

sh make_install.sh

 

$ fglrxconfig (This will make a /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 you need to copy that to xorg.conf)

 

(Now keep in mind that you need a .conf file, I suffer a lot with this, but drakxconf helped me here.)

PS: With this drive, 8.8, if I let the Option in .conf "UseFastTLS" "2", the wine works but the 3D goes to space and if I let "UseFastTLS" "0", wine blank my screen but the 3D works ok.

I have installed Doom3... I'm close to cry now.

 

I'm sad to say that in the next days I'll change my ATI Radeon 9200 for an Nvidia card with a great drive for Linux.

 

I'm tyred of black screens, hangs and to wait the programmers of ATI to learn to work.

 

Trying to figure aout ATI drivers I fill like a :joker: doing this :pc:

 

ATI has lost another costumer for Nvidia. Sad but true.

 

And I emailed ATI to say that, cose they need to know... Who knows, maybe a day they wake up.

I need to come here to say that...

 

I changed my ATI Radeon 9200SE 64MB AGP for an "equivalent" Nvidia card.

A GeForce MX 4000 64MB AGP. The software of Nvidia is the best, everything works now. Is sad to say but the hardware of Nvidia sucks a lot.

In UT2004 at 1024x768 all in High is smoothle in Radeon, with GeForce I put in 800x600, disabled trilinear and this become good but still slow down sometimes.

 

What can we do? I love to have an ATI card with an Nvidia Drive, maybe this work great hehe. :lol2:
