k,

if you dist-upgrade to the current hoary, make sure the new gamin is installed. It replaces fam, I was told but...I had to

apt-get install gamin

apt-get remove fam

thx arctic! When I was asked, they asked if I made the d3a icons. So that should give ya an idea of the direction they may be looking.

There have been some big developments in regards to Gnoppix that I'm

excited to report. Recently, I've been contacted by developers working

on the new Debian derivative "Ubuntu" about collaboration between

Ubuntu and Gnoppix.

Ubuntu is a light fork of Debian unstable -- heavily GNOME based --

released every six months in conjunction with the GNOME release

schedule. The project is funded and sponsored by a new startup called

Canonical Ltd. Most importantly though, the project is being actively

worked on many Debian and GNOME developers who are giving back to

their respective projects as they do the work in Ubuntu.

While Ubuntu's primary project is an installable CD based on the

Debian installer, they have done a good deal of work on an Live CD

version of their distribution. Since both Gnoppix and Ubuntu are

working from within Debian to create GNOME based Live CDs, a rich

collaboration seems like an unambiguous win for both sides.

As a result, and barring any major objects, my currently plan is to

merge the two projects; in the future, Gnoppix and the Ubuntu Live CD

will be the same project. Gnoppix will benefit from Ubuntu's work on a

highly integrated Debian-based GNOME desktop and Ubuntu will benefit

from a solid Live CD base. Both projects will be able to complement

each other and pursue what they are best at Since both projects are

committed to Free Software, we're be able to part ways at any point in

the future if the goals of the two projects diverge.

I hope others are as excited about this development as I am and I --

and

the Ubuntu team -- welcome feedback of any sort.

Ahh.....nice fonts in ubuntu (a Debian). This was on the Ubuntu Forum.

Drop this file in your home directory renamed to ".fonts.conf" and log out and in again. It turns on auto hinting and makes your fonts smooth

This may not be necessary -- A quick look at my Hoary box shows auto hinting is already enabled by default globally (for all users) in /etc/fonts/local.conf.

yes, it's there, but not working. Thx zenwhen, is now!

pfff.... i just reinstalled ubuntu and thought: okay, let us break this box. i am trying to find a way to solve the automatic resolv.conf-overwrite in ubuntu and i have spend hours with it now, still there ain't much success. 15 minutes of perfect web-access then all dead again. and i really hacked some files and wrote scripts, deactivated ipv6 manually and nothing. absolutely nothing but disaster... frustrating. i downloaded a 2.4.26 kernel for fun and bootet into it and ...well ... it worked.. somehow... mouse was dead, system terribly slow. later i saw that i downloaded the wrong architecture. ooops! :D

i hope, i find a way to stabilize this router-mess. i guess lots of people are frustrated from it and a solution would be welcomed by all. B)

Well, I've finally gotten around to installing!

So far so good - nvidia is up, cedega is installed and running (from rpm, using alien) - need that so my gf can play Zoo Tycoon :P - this is on the box she uses.

I'm impressed. Ubuntu rocks.

Thanks for the initial post here cybrjackle, VERY helpful!

Hi guys,

Installed Ubuntu 4.10 on a Compaq Presario 1201EA laptop and love it. Asked this once at Ubuntu Forum but never got any replys, so maybe one of you can give a hint:

My Compaq laptop has a Trident Cyberblade i1 graphics card. The slight annoyance is that my screen is slightly offset to the right so that part of the screen is cut off and on the left had side there is a black stripe. The bios is very primitive so there is nothing that I can do there. Is there a way to tweak the Xfree config to shift the screen more to the right? Which parameters? Any info appreciated.

Thanks

Hashimoto
