devries
You're motherboard is supported, even RAID, just the combination of Windows and Linux on your setup won't work. PS It's possible to install Mandrake on the IDE drive. Don't give up so easily. What errors did you get?
worf105
Hi devries, I had some success last night, I read some where that kernel 2.6.8 works great with my set-up. I booted with CD1 and pressed <F2> for advanced and only saw 2 options for kernels, 2.4.x and 2.6.? (not 8), so I loaded 2.6.? and I got this blue screen asking for drivers for my SCSI device. You advice is much anticipated and appreciated, Kind Regards, Andrew P.S. I am at the moment downloading the AMD 64Bit MDK10 rc1 ISO's. With some luck these will work well. devries
Ok I have been doing some reading on this (wasn't completely sure) and it seems it's not a good idea to install linux afterall. :( It seems when Linux mounts a Windows raid array it will damage it. http://www.aoaforums.com/forum/archive/ind...hp/t-25365.html your points: If you have downloaded the mandrak 10ce it comes standard with the 2.6.3 kernel (the newest when mandrake was released) The 2.4 25?? kernel is older but some support in that kernel hadn't been ported to the new 2.6 kernel). In 10.1 we'll be getting 2.6.8xx I think The scci drivers are for the sata drives. It's not a problem with 32 or 64 bit operating systems. UIt's a problem about how Linux deals with raid (ie it's a driver problem). One solution: Install Linux on you're sata drives (raid even) and windows on the IDE drive :D. But I can understand when you don't see that as a solution :D
worf105
Cheers devries, I have put in the 40GB IDE drive and partitioned it in 2, 1 2GB Linux Swap and the other 38GB for the rest (Linux Ext 3). I do not want MDK to use any of the RAID disks (just to ignore it all together), just the 40GB IDE. I am not keen to disconnect the SATA drive to install MDK, all I want is to find away to install to IDE 0 and only use that drive. I did read from the MSI forum about someone using MDK 10 (2.6.8) and worked great with no real probs. I am just hoping that the MDK 10.1 AMD 64bit with 2.6.8xx Kernel will allow the install to the IDE 0 (40GB PATA drive) and just ignore the SATA drive in a RAID 0 configuration. Below is the problems I am having (without the IDE HDD installed, but still the same when the IDE HDD installed): Hi again, CD's are O.K. First problems: When i boot from CD1 i get all the text which is fine except if get things along the lines of: hde lost interrupt hdg max request size: 128KiB hdg lost interupt after that in the graphical section when you choose the language this is O.K, but after agreeing to the license the box Gray's out for about 10 Min's. once it shows test i get the following: i can't read the partition table for device hdg it's too corrupt for me . i can try to go on, erasing over bad partition (ALL DATA will be lost!). the other solution is to not allow DrakX..... After that i go on to partitioning. Box shows: hde mount point: /mnt/windows device hde 1 DOS drive letter C (just a guess) size: 168GB (147%) hdg all greyed out. "size:168GB(147%)" my SATA drive are 120GB each. I feel that it can not see the RAID array and only recognises the drive as singles. help needed to get me through this Note: On the text part of install it said something about DMA on these drive. I have not enabled DMA on these drive as yet, but will if required. Also said something about control Bit on IDE and a work around... Kind Regards, Andrew Thanks devries, I have now installed a PATA HDD on IDE 0 but still no go. I feel that it not only the RAID, but the whole motherboard. I would like to thank all that have helped, but i will stick to windows until such a time that Mandrake supports my mobo. Take care, Andrew I would only intall MDK onto the RAID drive after I feel comfertable with it, but until I can have a test drive and get a feel for it I will be keeping Windows on RAID drives. I would appreciate any more ideas to get MDK installed to the IDE drive. Kind Regrads, Andrew Edited September 7, 2004 by worf105
devries
Yes you can install Mandrake but it will damage you're windows install. When you boot into Mandrake a linux raid driver will be loaded that won't work nice with the windows install. But ofcourse you can try. Disable in the raid bios (don't exactly know how this board works, else in you 'normal' bios) raid. Boot form CD1, mandrake will see the IDE drive and 2 SATA drives. Install Mandrake on the IDE drive. (and don't let Lilo (the bootloader) install on the SATA drives. Boot into Mandrake to see if all works. To upgrade the kernel grab one from kernel.org and build and install it. Shut down, enable raid again and try booting in Windows and Mandrake. That probably won't work :) But we'll deal with that later Have fun
worf105
Hi, The AMD64 MDK 10.0 rc1 boots with nop problems what so ever. It askes where to install so I pick my ide drive. devries
Choose ctrl-alt-f2 and type modprobe sata_sil, then ctrl-alt-f1 and continue with the install. Good luck
worf105
Hi devries, Well I have now managed to install MDK 10.0 AMD60 rc1 to my IDE drive. LILO loaded with about 5 options, onebeing windows (work great). I use the <F11> @ POST to choose boot drive. :D Some problems: I can only get into the text mode only, as far as I know I did load KDE and Gnome. How do I get them to load from the command line. (either) I have the nVidia drivers for my graphics card and motherboard. I burned them to CD/DVD but how to I get access to them from the command line and run them (I have the commands from the site to run them) (I would rather use the GUI). Kind Regards, Andrew P.S. I do appreciate all this help "devries" Edited September 7, 2004 by worf105
devries
To log into X (the graphics server) you'll probably have to adjust the monitor settings. Log in as root (by typing root <enter> password <enter>), start XFdrake (by typing XFdrake) and adjust your settings so your monitor can handle them. Log out as root (by typing exit), login as normal user (username <enter> password <enter>) and start X by typing startx. For installing the nvidia drivers look in the FAQs of this board. Have fun PS: No problem :) Edited September 7, 2004 by devries
worf105
Me again, I have managed to sort out the problem by booting from the CD1 and updating MDK. The problem was I did not read the instruction enough and said NO to the GUI to start when MDK starts. I have printed the instruction on how to Install nVidia drivers for FaQ's and followed them. but with problems. I typed "uromi binutils" and was told that already installed. I typed "urpmi kernel-source" and it asked for CD3. Put in CD3 and nothing happened, it just sat there. timed out and asked for CD1 and then CD2 telling me I may wish to update my kernel. (could have a corrupt CD3, downloading another cpoy and try again) I typed "chmod +x (nvidia file name) then ./ (nvidia file name) and the install begins. I was told that it could not find kernel and ended. any idea what to do now. Kind regards Andrew Edited September 7, 2004 by worf105
worf105
quick note: I have downloaded the drivers from nVidias site for my graphics card called "Linux AMD64" or should it be "Linux IA64" and drivers "Linux AMD64" for my motherboard. As soon as I get my NIC working I could find out things for my self in the FAQ's and along the road learn something. :P It is a pain shutting down MDK and booting into windows each time I have a problem. I will be changing my siggy as soon as I get MDK running as it should. Kind Regards, Andrew Edited September 7, 2004 by worf105
devries
The AMD64 drivers are fine :) You need the kernel source for the nividia-drivers to install. Check with uname -r what kernel you've installed and download the corrsponding kernel-source from one of the mandrake mirrors if you're CD is corrupted. Install it (as root) with urpmi kernelXXXXXXX-source.rpm (where xxxx is your kernel). Then try again. Good night. :D Edited September 7, 2004 by devries
worf105
Hi devries, That is me using Mozilla now to post and I love this tabbed browsing :D That the NIC driver installed and conf'ed. Still having trouble with graphics drivers, but not giving up. problems are: during the install i am told "kernel config to load rivafb as a loaded kenel module" after that i get "ERROR unable to build nvidia kernel module". cheers mate, Andrew Edited September 7, 2004 by worf105
devries
Ignore the first warning (about rivafb) and pay attention to the second one. One wild guess of me: Are you trying to build the driver with X open (in the GUI?). That's not possible, you have to buil it in a terminal with no X running. More realistic help: can you post the relevant parts of /var/log/nvidia-installer.log Good morning :D
worf105
Hi devries, The file called "nvidia-installer.log" found in "/var/log/" had a lock on it not allowing me to open it. I had to do, once in the "/var/log/" dir run the following: "chmod +777 nvidia-installer.log" which give all access to this file, is this O.K.
