Some good tips there, but i agree with a comment already made on this about

Networking (Note ifconfig, route, mii-tool, nslookup commands are obsolete)

They are definitely not obsolete, what we do without ifconfig? Don't know how the author screwed up on that one :unsure:

erm I was pretty shocked but it was urza pointed it out to me :woops:

 

its now called something else and I sadly lament its passing along with making me feel old by youngsters like urza pointing it out...

 

we're toast old chap... time to move over for these new kids ....

Toast? your probably right. But  typing ifconfig still works on MDK-10  so i will keep on using it. :P

I can't even remember what replaced it.... off the top of my head and it still works so....ho hum... I guess it was something with kernel2.6 and IPv6 ...

uh...I did?

 

I think I need to read that...I don't know many commands...I do it the same way I usually do in DOS: try random stuff that sounds right.

Well i run the 2.6 kernel, and the old ancient commands still work. :D

Wonder why they changed it? does the new command give more info or something? C'mon somebody here must know.

I'd like to know too. I update gentoo daily and ipconfig will works for me. And I'm using kernel 2.6.7

Guess i am just an old "stick in the mud"

 

 

If ifconfig wasn't available, how would you get your IP information? (MAC address, IP address, etc) Is there another command available?

Probably because there arn't any docs for ip, nor is it covered in all

of the HowTos that newbies are pointed to. This isn't the first time

I've ranted about this, but I _still_ can't find a man page for ip (and

googling doesn't count....when you need the man page you don't have

internet.)
