sambo
I recently tried installing XMMS (the latest version), but found that it didn't work and crashed. I remember reading somewhere that some versions of XMMS work better than others in mdk10. Does anyone know which versions are better? Which versions do you use? Thanks. bvc
[root@localhost root]# cat /etc/release Mandrakelinux release 10.1 (Beta 1) for i586 [root@localhost root]# rpm -q xmms xmms-1.2.10-7mdk [root@localhost root]#
idud
I use xmms-1.2.10 downloaded from http://www.xmms.org, it works fine n my Mdk-10-OE except for some KDE bugs. If we click the "minimize" button, the only window taht minimized is the main xmms window, playlist and eq window left on the desktop. sambo
I've tried both 1.2.9 and 1.2.10 and they both freeze up as soon as I try and play an mp3. Does anyone know what would cause this? Thanks! :D
bvc
yes, you are not use the right combo of -sound server with the wm or de -the output plugin being used by xmms in its preferences are you using kde? gnome? other? do you use the alsa driver or oss for your soundcard? luizmdk
1.2.10 , It is in Mandrake
io333
I agree with the above. XMMS always crashes/freezes for me if I don't first go into XMMS prefs and change the sound to ALSA, OSS, or whatever, after I install.
bvc
xmms has always done this especially with kde. It is not any worse of an app then in the past. It is the most consistent, stable, media player, linux has ever had, w/o a doubt. Many are not using xmms because they think it sucks or crashes. It is not xmms's fault usually. Sure, it would be nice if xmms detected your sound settings/wm/de at first start, but who wants to code it and who want the extra baggage/buggage? The best thing in my opinion would be for xmms to ask you at first start what your setting are. At least that way, users would know that maybe they didn't select the rt settings.....they can google and find out what the right setting are for them......bla bla bla..... Latem
If your XMMS is crashing when trying to play an mp3, make sure your shortcut/ menu shortcut command line is just "xmms" and not "soundwrapper xmms" or something like that. I think the rpm install, or the xmms install with Mandrake puts that command line in the shortcut, and it doesnt work. Besides that, and the minimizing thing/bug, XMMS owns. io333
I wish it would minimize to the system tray, but I've been wishing that for years. I thought I saw a wrapper for XMMS once that would do that, but it needed to be compiled into KDE or something, which had me hitting the back button as fast as my little fingers could click! zero0w
In Mandrake 9.2, XMMS could minimize to the program bar, but in Mandrake 10 it couldn't do that completely anymore (w/ playlist still hanging on the screeen). Is it an XMMS bug or a KDE issue?
Latem
I think it's an issue with KDE > some version.
bvc
Must be kde because it has always minimized in gnome.
sambo
Fixed! Looks like it was the "soundwrapper xmms" problem that Latem mentioned. Thanks for the help all! :D
