jlc
Release Info If you wanted to install it: Here you go If you already have it and not running (~x86): emerge sync && emerge -uDpv system Filter through, set your USE flags and "emerge -uD system" emerge -uDpv world after that. Have fun!
83mercedes
cybrjackle, What do you think of it personally?

jlc
I like gentoo, portage is handy tool. If i want something up and fast i'l use fedora/slackware. If I want to take a little more time gentoo. Plus I run Gentoo on Sun Sparc machines and there aren't a lot of Linux's ported to sparc processors. Why run Solaris when you can have Linux
83mercedes
SwiftDeath, You *can* redownload, but it's not needed; you can just install off what you already have then update from that.
tyme
if you run: emerge -u world you'll have 2004.2 Gentoo does a rolling release cycle. You install it once, and if you keep updating you'll always have the most recent "version".
83mercedes
Right. But I have to ask, (since I don't know), what are these commands that cybrjackle refers to: emerge sync && emerge -uDpv system Filter through, set your USE flags and "emerge -uD system" emerge -uDpv world after that. I just did 'emerge sync' then 'emerge --update world' and I *think* I have updated, correct?
tyme
he's using some extra options u is the same as update D is for deep dependency checking, and isn't always necessary p is for pretend, it will just list what it's going to install instead of actually doing it v is verbose, just gives you more information system just means the system base, not every program (where as world includes all installed programs). see man emerge for more options. jlc
#man emerge --update (-u) Updates packages to the best version available, which may not always be the highest version number due to masking for testing and development. This will also update direct dependencies which may not what you want. In general use this option only in combi- nation with the world or system target. --deep (-D) When used in conjunction with --update, this flag forces emerge to consider the entire dependency tree of packages, instead of checking only the immediate dependencies of the packages. As an example, this catches updates in libraries that are not directly listed in the dependencies of a package. --verbose (-v) Tell emerge to run in verbose mode. Currently this flag causes emerge to print out GNU info errors, if any, and to show the USE flags that will be used for each package when pretending. --pretend (-p) ***(-a) is good too***** --ask (-a) Before performing the merge, display what ebuilds and tbz2s will be installed, in the same format as when using --pretend; then ask whether to continue with the merge or abort. Using --ask is more efficient than using --pretend and then executing the same command without --pretend, as dependencies will only need to be calculated once. jlc
tyme was quicker ;-) I always do system first and then world, just a preference of mine.
83mercedes
Thanks for the information. I mostly use debian, have gentoo on spare hd, and admit to being a newbie in gentoo. But, I should have thought about that first (man emerge). My oversight, and thanks again. And again, in my opinion this is the best forum I have seen. 83mercedes
cybrjackle Hope you didn't take that like RTM, I was just pointing out that is were I grabbed the info from. ;-) lol, not at all! Even though I would have deserved it! And by the way, if I had done that on the debian mailing list, I probably would have gotten a big fat RTFM. Those guys are tough. I was literally kicking myself, cuz I know better....and besides that, you and many other good people have helped me out immensely over the past couple of years, so just Thanks!
