maxgravitt
Now that I got my NVIDIA GeForce 4 working, I was thinking about upgrading :D . I like play games such as Unreal Tournament, etc. I am wondering what are the best graphics cards for gaming on Linux. I am running Mandrake 10. thanks!! liquidzoo
nvidia cards are really well supported in Linux. When I buy a new card, it will be an nvidia card.
VeeDubb
nvidia is the only sensible option for Linux. 100% of them work 100% of the time. The only time people have problems is when it's a true hardware conflict (in which case, it wouldn't work in windows either) or when they personaly screw something up. matrox and integrated chipsets are worthless for gaming IMNSHO and driver support can be hit or miss with ATI. spiedra
Also Nvidia is the easiest to get working on a linux box.
SwiftDeath
I have a nVidia Geforce 4 Ti 4200 and its running very well on MDK 10. You just gotta be carefull when upgrading Mesa it can mess up or nVidia drivers.
zero0w
I would suggest that you wait until checking out Doom III on Linux, then the clear answer will come out because it is the first game to push your graphics card to the edge on this platform. zero0w
Also, check out the new GeForce 6800 LE, when overclocked it matches GeForce 6800 closely: http://www.tbreak.com/reviews/article.php?cat=grfx&id=325 Although it is currently only available thru OEM channels, nVidia may offer it to wider audience later once GeForce FX5200/5600 series phase out. johnnyv
Don't get a 5600 or below a gf 4 Ti 4200 is faster.
tyme
my FX5600 isn't any slower than my GF4 Ti4200 was...IMHO, it is in fact faster. but that's just my end user experience (I don't really trust benchmarks).
jlc
5700ultra & ti4200 and they both work great for gaming. Keep in mind your processor also is responsible for how well your video is pushed. If you have a slow proc and a brand spanking new 6800 it probably wont do anything different than a GF 4.
ShadowFoxLSU
nvidia seems to be the best. My ATi Raedon 9000 gave me nothing but problems

Well i get lower framerates for ut2004 and glxgears with the 5600 compared to the 4200 both 8X agp.

zero0w
Doom III changes everything, so I suggest try and see approach: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2146
zero0w
Well, it looks my next upgrade card will be nVidia's NV43: GeForce 6600 GT w/ AGP support. It has 8 pipelines, 500Mhz GPU/ 128bit 1000Mhz video memory support (exact figures may differ on launch) - not a vast improvement over 9800XT but it will exhibit excellent Linux support and is reasonably priced US$ 199. NV43 will also have some fine tuning in memory performance. 3D Mark 2003 sample testing suggests it will score around 8,000. Not bad. http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=17619 Edited September 7, 2004 by zero0w
