illogic-al
the only thing i can think of then is using swapping in a cdrom from another machine temporarily.

Im lost and its been all day and like 5 different user boards and i havent gotten a response yet. wtf?!?! I didnt even get to use Mandrake yet and im totally disappointed actually i just check the 10.0 INSTALL.txt and found this: If for any reason the previous methods do not fit your needs (you want to perform a network install, an install from pcmcia devices or...), you will need to make a boot floppy: * Under Linux (or other modern UNIX systems) type at prompt: $ dd if=xxxxx.img of=/dev/fd0 * Under Windows, follow the method described in point 2, but using xxxxx.img (see below) instead of cdrom.img. * Under DOS, assuming your CD is drive D:, type: D:\> dosutils\rawrite.exe -f images\xxxxx.img -d A where "xxxxx.img" is one of the available boot images: +---------------+----------------------------------------------------+ | cdrom.img | install from CD-ROM | |---------------+----------------------------------------------------| | hd_grub.img | install from hard-disk (from a Linux, Windows, or | | | ReiserFS filesystem) | | | you can configure it for your system at: | | | http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/hd_grub.cgi | |---------------+----------------------------------------------------| | network.img | install from ftp/nfs/http | | | NOTE: you will need to insert network_drivers.img | | | in your floppy drive when prompted | |---------------+----------------------------------------------------| | pcmcia.img | install from pcmcia devices | |---------------+----------------------------------------------------| | hdcdrom_usb.img | | | install from hard-disk or cdrom connected to USB | +---------------+----------------------------------------------------+ You may also burn "boot.iso" on a CDROM and boot from it. It supports all installations methods, cdrom, network, and hard-disk. so it would seem you are looking for hdcdrom_usb.img not usb_cdrom.img
Guest homeslice
That was in fact the file i was searching for. It was just a typo on this one msg board. Do you know where i can find that file? hdcdrom_usb.img I think im ready to just go and download a different distribution bc it seems that only mandrake doesnt support this usb install? Sorry about the long wait for the reply.

Guest homeslice
I saw something on their bugsite, i think named something like anthill(?), that they actually forgot to package the image that allows installation from usb cd-rom. I have all three iso's downloaded and saved in my /root/ folder. Do you know how i can do a Hard disk isntall? I got really lost when they were talking about partitions and such Whaddya think about updating the bios so that maybe it would support the USB? How and can that be done? illogic-al
it can be done via a normal cd. just get the boot.iso, boot up, you'll see options of where you can boot from and chhose hard drive. Then all that's necessary is to give the location to your mdk iso files.
Guest zipjay
i was having trouble with this.. but i fixed it!! its very easy to install mandrake with a usb-cdrom as long as mandrake finds your usb controller.. first you need to make you an installation floppy.. or if you got a second cdrom burn you a copy of boot.iso and then boot up.. in my case.. i was using my laptop and i have some compaq prorietary cdrom and linux didnt find it so it said "CD-ROM not found." this is normal if your setup is same as mine.. next click ok and then it will say "insert additional drivers floppy.." ok now if you booted with the boot.iso ignore this and just click ok.. after a few seconds it will pop up and say Floppy is not linux ext2.. this is fine.. just hit no.. then finally it pops up a list of drivers.. the one you want is cdrom.ko ... after that i SHOULD... (it did for me) run from your usb drive.. :) i hope i fixed this for ya!
