I lost power this morning which caused the machine not to shutdown properly. Now, when I boot, I am sent to the prompt rather than the graphical login. When I run startx, I get: "-bash: startx: command not found"

rpm -q |grep XFree86 gives the following output:

XFree86-100dpifont-s4.2.1-3mdk

XFree86-4.4.2.1-3mdk

XFree86-750dpi-fonts-4.2.1-3mdk

XFree86-SVGA-3.36-38mdk

XFree86-xfs-4.2.1-3mdk

XFree86-devel-4.2.1-3mdk

XFree86-libs-4.2.1-3mdk

XFree86-server-4.2.1-3mdk

XFree86-server-common-3.3.6-28mdk

There is no startx in /usr/X11R6/bin.

I'm pretty new at all of this, so any help you can offer at all would be much appreciated.

What happens if you put in your Cdrom #1 and reboot???? Does it come up with the option of being able to "Upgrade" or does it only come up with "Install" ??? If it comes up with the "Upgrade" option then you are resonably OK. Just continue to run the "Upgrade" procedure and it will correct any anomolies it finds on the way and bring you back to normal again.

If however it does not come up with the "Upgrade" option but only the "Install" one then it means that your OS has been corrupted to the point that the boot up procedure has not been able to detect a working or viable OS. In other words you are in deep s++t . So rather than muse over it all you might just as well continue to do the reinstall from this point on.

Chances are most likely that the "Upgrade" path is the one you will encounter.

Using this method saves a hell of a lot more time than pondering over how to do this, then that, then someting else, for hours on end and then finally having to do what I suggest the first time round .

Please let us know how this works out for you.

Cheers. John.
