brucedjones
im useing mandrake 10 with kernel 2.4.25 (i would b using 2.6 but then my isdn card woulnt work). i was useing kernel 2.6.3 before and my sound was working perfectly. but now that ive had to downgrade i get no sound, when i start kde i get an error message: Sound server informational message: Error while initializing the sound driver: device: default can't be opened for playback (No such file or directory) The sound server will continue, using the null output device. in order to try and fix the problem i re-installed the ALSA drivers as these are the ones that worked with 2.6.3. but when i run "chmod a+rw /dev/dsp /dev/mixer /dev/sequencer /dev/midi" it returns: chmod: cannot access `/dev/dsp': No such file or directory chmod: cannot access `/dev/mixer': No such file or directory chmod: cannot access `/dev/sequencer': No such file or directory chmod: cannot access `/dev/midi': No such file or directory at a guess these are the devices that cant be found. i could do with some help. id use kernel 2.6.3 but the interent is more important then sound i think

jerrytaff
Never mind - you have probably fixed my problem too! I've also had to go back with kernel - due to initialisation problems with my mouse under 2.6, and that also kills my via8233 (which worked fine with every distro from 8.2). So now I know what to try. Thanks
