I have installed mandrake 9.2 on my computer, I have got sound, but, at full volume, and would like to be able to turn it down. when I run dmesg I see the following messeges:

Via 686a/8233/8235 audio driver 1.9.1-ac3

via82cxxx: Six channel audio available

PCI: Setting latency timer of device 00:11.5 to 64

ac97_codec: AC97 codec, id: CMI97 (CMedia)

AC97 codec does not have proper volume support.

via82cxxx: Codec rate locked at 48Khz

via82cxxx: board #1 at 0xD800, IRQ 22

I guess an update of something would fix it but what?

other details

motherboard ASROCK M7VM4

Athlon XP2400+

512Mb

chipsets North.B VIA KM400

South.B VIA VT8235CE

soundchip via8233

/etc/modules.conf file has these lines

alias sound-slot-0 via82cxxx_audio

alias char-major-116 snd

alias char-major-14 soundcore

above via82cxxx_audio snd-pcm-oss

alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss

alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss

alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss

alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss

alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

lsmod has these lines

snd-pcm-oss 43652 0 (unused)

snd-pcm 79588 0 [snd-pcm-oss]

snd-page-alloc 9044 0 [snd-pcm]

snd-timer 18436 0 [snd-pcm]

snd-mixer-oss 14200 0 [snd-pcm-oss]

snd 41380 0 [snd-pcm-oss snd-pcm snd-timer snd-mixer-oss]

via82cxxx_audio 22112 1

ac97_codec 15828 0 [via82cxxx_audio]

uart401 8356 0 [via82cxxx_audio]

sound 71528 0 [via82cxxx_audio uart401]

soundcore 6340 0 [snd via82cxxx_audio sound]

If i run alsaconf it is only willing to configure with the module snd-via82xx which doesn't work with my sound chip.

I am a linux noobie and am stumped.

Thanks in advance

Have you tried adjusting the volume level in the program you are using? Like in xmms or xine? You can also try adjusting the volume in aumix. aumix should be in the K menu under Multimedia -> Sound, but if not open up a terminal (konsole will do) and type:

su <enter>
<root password and press enter>
urpmi aumix

to install it. That should give you volume control.

Also, welcome to the board!

Hi, thanks for the reply.

Yeh, have tried adjusting the volume in xmms, and kmix, and now aumix too.

All make no difference.

I'm thinking there should be an update to the ac97 codec having seen the message it gives in dmesg. but i can't find one anywhere.

Thanks
