chris:b
In the thread 'Complete OSX look' a link was posted with a .avi file, where the developer are presenting their tool, a sort: how to - animated. They captured the desktop, the movements of the mouse and everything. I was so impressed :o Wanted to do this - with my screen. The software that does the job is xvidcap (and the included gui gvidcap), to find on contrib for Mandrake 10.0. It took a couple of hours to find a video encode format (in the settings) which my hardware, obviously too slow, can handle without loosing too much frames. The first result: http://home.tiscali.nl/berenstraat/test2.mpeg (it's big, ~ 946 kb) Settings: 8 fps, video format: mpeg4, use shared memory: on, capture mouse: on) Is this cool? Anyone has tips about video encoding, settings, want to try this also?

chris:b
I figured out what was 'wrong' with my hardware (dropped frames): nothing. Because I don't play games I never installed the nvidia drivers, and without hw acceleration (or how do you say?) video encoding is a pain. So I installed the drivers, and now everything is going smooth. I am ready to make some educational introduction videos about Linux ;-) Second test is here, it's 6.6 MB, I am sorry: http://home.tiscali.nl/berenstraat/test2.avi But I can't seem to use the mpeg1 encoding format. When I try it, it won't play. ?? mpeg4 works, the MS media player compatible avi format works. Have to learn more about it.

subc
Very interesting information :-) Just one question: Is Totem the best player for these files? or should I get VLC or something else?
chris:b
I guess you can use the one you like the most :-) It depends a bit on the codecs you have installed, because when recording the screen one can choose between 4 video formats: mpeg1, mpeg4 , and two MS Media Player compatible formats. Kaffeine is my videoplayer (xine based as is Totem) and plays everything, and has a nice integration in konqueror and mozillla. - Mplayer and ogle should work too. Don't know VLC, sorry.
