I would go with Qchem's suggestion.

just:

urpmi xmms

However, (to answer the actual question in case you're just curious) what you need are the devel packages. you only have the binaries installed - to build things from source you need the development packages (the source and header files).

urpmi glib-devel

would resolve your error.

Sherpa: in case you are not confortable in installing things through terminal, try Mandrake Control Center (MCC) to get softwares.

To install xine you will need to install "xine-ui", compiling is the hardest way to install applications due to dependency issues. Try urpmi (as root) or the GUI way, it's easier and all dependency issues will be automatically solved.

Back to Xmms real quick

i downloaded it using urpmi and my sources only held the old version 1.2.9 or something like that, and it has bugs, i went to xmms's web site and they have vers 1.2.10 that fixes that problem they only have red hat binaries and fedoria but no mandrake... is it ok to use red hat?

and on a curious note when i try to do the tar ball ./config now (i downloaded glib-devel) now it says this:

checking for pthread.h... yes
checking for glib-config... /usr/bin/glib-config
checking for GLIB - version >= 1.2.2... yes
checking for gtk-config... no
checking for GTK - version >= 1.2.2... no
*** The gtk-config script installed by GTK could not be found
*** If GTK was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in
*** your path, or set the GTK_CONFIG environment variable to the
*** full path to gtk-config.
configure: error: *** GTK+ >= 1.2.2 not installed - please install first ***
[root@localhost xmms-1.2.10]# urpmi GTK
The following packages contain GTK:
libwxPythonGTK2.4
libwxPythonGTK2.4-devel
perl-GTK
perl-GTK-GLArea
perl-GTK-GdkImlib
perl-GTK-GdkPixbuf
perl-GTK-Glade
perl-GTK-Gnome
perl-GTK-GtkHTML
wxGTK2.5
wxPythonGTK
[root@localhost xmms-1.2.10]

which one of those packages do i want?
