zero0w
Well since Mandrake 10 OE is out and I got a fast FTP for ISO, I upgraded to Mdk 10 OE. Now I can burn DVD+R, however couple things still stand out: 1) My LiteOn LDW-401S is capable of 4X DVD+R writing speed, but K3b auto-detected it to burn at 2.5x for my 4X capable DVD+R, is there anything I can do to specify K3b to burn at 4X (there's a choice of 1X, 2X and Auto, but not 4X :( )? 2) What does the simulation mode really do for DVD+R burning? At first I was testing my DVD+R writing (for Fedora Core 2 ISO) in simulation mode; in the middle, I decided to abort it, started burning the ISO. When I took the DVD+R disc out just after aborting the simulation, I found that the disc was actually being written even in simulation mode - as I could observe the dye changed the color in the inner CD region. So I wonder, is DVD+R writing really different from CD-R? Or it is just that simulation wasn't implemented in K3b or dvd+rw-tools command line utility for DVD+R writing? Gowator
the Current ban prevents me explaining the WHY but its not[/] illegal for you to make 'backup' DVD's. (Your in Hong kong no?) Im using MDK10CE and before that I was on Debian SID. Both of these work with k3b AND DVD+R. (and +RW) I have a DVD+R here right now.... written on Loinux with avi's What I havn't tried is to make a DVD copy. These are avi's which are 1-1-5GB per film then written onto DVD +R for convenience. Then I play them from Xine... by selecting file (not VCD)

zero0w
Now I can burn DVD+R, however couple things still stand out: 1) My LiteOn LDW-401S is capable of 4X DVD+R writing speed, but K3b auto-detected it to burn at 2.5x for my 4X capable DVD+R, is there anything I can do to specify K3b to burn at 4X (there's a choice of 1X, 2X and Auto, but not 4X :( )? I tried DVD+R of a different brand. It seems that the burning speed is determined by the compatibility between the drive and the disc, and possibly affected by firmware upgrade. A different DVD+R which specified at 2.4X speed can be burned at 4X as K3b / grokisof determined.
Gowator
Mine does the 2.4x thing too but its still pretty fast compared to the same amount of data on CD!
zero0w
Ok, I have come across the bitsetting feature (Book Type) of DVD+R burning. http://www.dvdplusrw.org/Article.asp?mid=0...=0&sid=2&aid=42 http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/ (Thru the command dvd+rw-booktype) So, anyone has experience on changing Book Type of a DVD+R / DVD+RW to DVD-ROM under Linux? If I want to change the Book Type of a DVD+R, is it done before burning? If so, what are the commands to enter to proceed with bitsetting (to DVD-Rom) and burning a DVD+R altogether? Your experience and guidance is really appreciated. Update: More about Bitsetting can be found here: http://www.dvdplusrw.org/Article.asp?mid=0...=0&sid=2&aid=44 http://www.dvdplusrw.org/Article.asp?mid=-...1&sid=-1&aid=45 Edited June 3, 2004 by zero0w
zero0w
OK, it looks like LiteOn DVD Writer owners would have a lot of resources and readings to dig up and play with: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?s=...&threadid=83441 The latest firmware for my writer (401S) has added bitsetting function. Now there're a lot of things to explore from here and on. I also found a DOS firmware flasher for LiteOn DVD-Writer, I can use FreeDOS to upgrade just in case: http://www.firmware-flash.com/~dhc014/ Wish the Bitsetting firmware patch would resolve my DVD+R compatibility problem in older DVD-Rom drive.
Finally with some update. The latest firmware for my Lite-On drive has enabled the bitsetting feature. Thumbs up to Lite-On for their commitment to customers. I have tried it on Windows, and it works! With bitsetting (change booktype) to DVD-Rom, even many older DVD-Rom drives can read DVD+R now. I'll test if it works on Linux in a moment after I fix my kernel panic problem (or maybe after a re-installation) mentioned in another thread. Seems like it is a bug which is fixed in the latest version of K3b, according to aRTee's Mandrake 10.1 review: One of the star applications of KDE, K3B, is even greater than before (and they fixed a bug that wouldn't let dvd+r's get burnt at the highest possible speed the drive and media combination was capable of). I know it actually says the selected burn speed doesn't matter when burning dvds, but it sure does. Thanks aRTee for reporting this bug. aRTee
No problem. On a side note, between LiteOn and NEC, I'd advice a NEC burner since there you can update the drives firmware from within Linux and start using it right after changing the firmware, no reboot at all! Plus, the quality of the drives is good, and they're cheap. Edited January 31, 2005 by aRTee
zero0w
Ah, this sucks. The 'dvd+rw-booktype' utility doesn't seem to support my writer yet. I reported it on the Debian cdwrite mailing list. Hopefully some hack on the dvd+rom-booktype.cpp file will fix it: http://lists.debian.org/cdwrite/2005/02/msg00000.html Edited February 3, 2005 by zero0w
