Uninstalled XFree>installed Xorg>got a screen but it was garbled (I have nvidia). Only messed with it for a total of about 30 minutes but will hopefully figure it out this weedend or sometime soon.

Xorg is basically Xfree86 4.4rc3, so it's not really any diffrent than you're use to. I've been using xorg since it's release, and haven't had any problems with it. Only thing I can think of for your problem is reinstalling the nvidia drivers.

then maybe I'm confused. Which X server does alpha trans? That's the one I want to tinker with. I was just bored and thought I'd check it out, though it's not useful at all, but rather anoying, yet, cool none the less.

 

Reinstall nvidia? Docs say not to use it.

Xserver from freedesktop.org does alpha blending etc.

Xorg is hosted on freedesktop.org, and doesn't do much that xfree 4.3 doesn't

Except give you that sense of inner satisfaction that comes from knowing you have the latest bleeding edge software... :P
